Hi! I was hacking together a little php script to try to show my xbox's online status on a web page. Nothing fancy, just on or off.

My first thought was to scrape my router's DCHP table to see if it was there or not, but I realized that the DCHP table doesn't remove the xbox when it goes offline. I guess it keeps the xbox in the table until something else requests an IP.

Soooo, since it usually has the same IP all the time anyway, I tried pinging it, but from what I've been reading lately, it doesn't seem like you can ping an un-modded xbox, can you? Are they set up to hide from networks by default or something?

I'm working with a mac running OS X, so I've got access to unix tools, etc. Is there *some* way I can tell whether my xbox is active on my LAN or not?

Derp. I think I got it--static IP on the xbox seems to make it pingable, yes?

Hiya

It would make sense, if the IF is not being released/renewed by the DHCP.

DHCP will depend on how long your setting the leases for it to stay in the ARP cache.

I think the main problem is that the NIC is basically controlled by the software, just turning your xbox on does not set up the xbox to accept connections, the only way ive found to ping is goto the network setup screen, click on connect and then the NIC is recieving ping requests, if you leave that config menu, the NIC closes again, and the pinging stops.

Had a go with signing in to xbox live as i though i would be able to ping whilst connected to live, actually suprised you cant , seems ICMP packets are blocked.
