hey, could you unlock the xbox HD then pop it in a PC and (while running from a boot disk) edit files on the PC?

you can get software to explore it as it's a different file system which is not windows compaible.

Although i know a few people who have wiped the hard drive this way, personally I would just use ftp

no, the file system is different, it's like pluggin an apple mac HD in and expecting to read it, the software that will read it is ropey at best in my experience, like I said, just use ftp

If the HD is unlocked your real only option would be to FDISK it and wipe it clean so it can be formatted for a spare HD in your PC. At least that is all I know you can do with them.
