Seeing all this traffic about 1.6 troubles, I wonder. Is swapping encoders possible? I have never even heard of it attempted thus far, but why?

With my hot air gun and heater plate I have already easily removed several Sharp and ST TSOP chips and Connexant encoders off of 1.1's.

Could I take a 1.4 board, detach the Focus encoder and whatever TSOP; iron out the pads, then replace those with a 1.1 encoder and TSOP set, boot and run?

Would I have to do more swapping, or is it just not possible because of initial firmware/hardware conflict?

No it isnt doable for a few reasons

1) The 1.6/1.6b use the Xcalibur encoder chip which we dont have reg entries for. Thats why 1.6 doesnt support VGA we have no way to plug the regs

2) The BIOS for the first 5 XBOXs is interchangable ie the 1.4/1.5 BIOS has support for both Focus and Connexant encoders but obviously it doesnt support the Xcalibur encoder and the 1.6 BIOS doesnt support Focus/Connexant

3) The chips pinouts are different so you couldnt even properly solder a Focus on a 1.6 or an Xcalibur on a 1.2 motherboard

Now that said I spent about 3 years working on forcing the XBOX to output 240P. During that time I came to the conclusion that an Xcalibur is a rebranded Connexant. Some of the regs for Connexant work on a 1.6b. If you would like to learn more about this I suggest checking out the 240P thread over at Xtras. Be warned its about 200 pages Very Happy But you will find the multiple leaked MS BIOS source code I posted, along with step by step kernel patching and regs etc.

Well crap on my front porch, I thought they were all the same pin out. That really puts the final nail in the permanent solution the Xcalibur coffin. The regs I knew already, I wasn't planning on making use of a post op Xcalibur. More or less just disposing of them was the plan.

So the first five BIOS release are universal? That's amazing! So I could potentially change out Focus and Connexant chips without even needing to swap the RAM, TSOP, or even the BIOS to run?

That's odd, a relationship between the two was not something I considered. 200 whopping pages, oh my. That is surely something I am interested in, I'll have to take a peak every now and then. I saw your post about the 240P ZNESX release, it's not my forté but congrats regardless!
