Hi all!. trying to get this xbox hd upgrade to work. I tried using xboxhdm but got stuck when it said cannot get password hdkey. at the menu of xboxhdm. so I'm wiping the HD and going to start again. browing the internet as a guest didn't show very much accurate information for upgrading so thought this question would belong in here.
so just need to know a good updated and super easy tutorial to follow with adding a larger HD, I just followed terry68firebirds tut and softmodded a v1.6 xbox successfully! here is a link to his popular tutorial.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pMkRAlMlFJU
and browsing a bit around in these forums, I had found this tutorial from 2005 and really have no clue but have downloaded everything it said too so far.
please help a noob, cheers and thanks really can't wait to get this going...

So you have a softmodded XBOX currently, and you want to install a larger hard drive?
XBOXHDM would be probably the easiest as long as you have access to a computer with IDE ports. I, like you, have had a lot of issues with XBOXHDM being able to find my EEPROM.BIN on the disc though.
The link below is about as detailed as I could find and has been updated this year so it's probably your best bet.
Sorry have to disagree the easiest way to install a larger HDD by far is to use Chimp2618 Xbox HDD cloning app.
As long as you have the original retail HDD softmoded and working OK then, unless you have another alternative power source, all you'll need is a molex splitter to power the replacemnt HDD during the cloning.
The only difficult part may be finding a decent size lockable IDE HDD or a SATA adapter that works - the Xbox is very picky about them.
BTW try to find the install version of Chimp2618 because the disc version is an absolute pain to use. Also be aware that only Chimp2618 will work with a v1.6 Xbox so don't try it with any earlier version of Chimp.
There are plenty of tutorials on how to use Chimp2618 if you search a bit.

Hmmm... apparently the "chimp" method I linked isn't to your liking? Okay then.
Just follow the guide I linked and you won't have any issues.

Sorry but I was just going on what you actually said and didn't check your link. I assumed, understandably, that it was to a XHDM tutorial since that is the method you appeared to be championing in your earlier post.
Still if we both agree that Chimp2618 is the way to go then the OP has been given the same advice from two independent sources and he can be confident that it is sound.

Presumably, yes but I can't say for sure. The ones linked below look very similar to the ones I've used successfully.
Not trying to thread jack here but I actually see life present here. I have three questions.
First off in reply to the last person, I saw a video to which the guy used chimp, the ode cable from the disc drive and a second Xbox for a power source. With that method, I have a hdd dock station that I believe has a molex power connection, could I use it?
Secondly, can some one link me to a web store that actually still sells ide hdd preferably the largest one that is compatible with the Xbox.
Thirdly, I had my Xbox modded years ago and I think I took it off because I still wanted to play halo. I still have the exploits on the hdd, it was the splinter cell exploit. All I would have to do at this point is find an original edition splinter cell and boot that save game file right? I found a retro store and ordered the game for $5 making sure it was not platinum.
You are correct about booting the save game but you will then need to reinstall the softmod or you will need to load SC every time.
