I feel your pain My 500GB drive in my xbox bit the dust some time ago and it wasn't even 3 years old thousands of GB's of data gone in the blink of a eye.
Strangely, enough it acted up when a DVD failed to rip and I rebooted thinking nothing of it, now whenever I try and use it in a xbox the mod will freeze or say something about "failing to copy" and it will not even work in a desktop it just says "Hard drive failure is imminent".

Try booting UBCD with the hard drive hooked up and use its recovery tools

i cant get the bios to see it anymore, but i will try anything. i think the controller board is shot. i can hear the platters spin up.
linux can see something there cos when i unplug it dmesg shows it dissapear, but ive tried live cd's and bios wont show it in 2 different computers, ive tested 2 psu's and the data cable checks out.
god i hadnt realized how much my kids used this thing, they are screaming bloody murder cos theres no ps2 games no movies and they are stuck with the games they have right now on their xbox's lol.
500 kids movies down the drain.
