(EDIT: The Xbox from Amazon apparently comes with games, and in one of the pictures, it contains ESPN NFL 2k5, which was made a month after Halo 2. So, I should expect the newest dashboard, or, if not, I can just get it off of the game. Huzzah.)

Full Title: Are these good enough places for tools to softmod, and will they actually work and are cheap? Also, are the things that I already have work too?

Since I don't want to flood that one video anymore, I'll just post here. Now, it seems like that many places don't have Xbox things. I got my eyes on a few things that fill my needs, which I will I will all use next month for
a retro gaming/MUGEN experience on a new HD TV that I got (not Full HD)

Let's go with the easy stuff first. I believe Amazon is trusted, so I might as well get one from there:
http://www.amazon.com/Microsoft-Xbox-Console/dp/B001E36YWU
along with some component cables...
http://www.amazon.com/Xbox-Component-Cable-Bulk-Packaging/dp/B000E61G4O

I already have a DVD that contains AID and a CD that I will use for Xboxhdm, shown

Sorry for the bad image quality, but I have literally no cameras, so I might as well just use my laptop's.

I'm buying a screwdriver set with Torx heads for the Xbox. It seems that I can unplug the hard drive of my Dell Dimension without messing with screws, which is a plus. Here's a pic showing it (sorry for darkness, the cables are barely peaking out since I didn't want to clean up a big mess)

Here's the link for the screwdriver set that I'll use
http://www.amazon.com/Pratt-Read-82033B-Torx-Screwdriver-6-Piece/dp/B001C06DGC/

Now, this is where I worry. There is two hard drives I have my eyes on now, since I found out that the hard drive I was looking at is about to be bumped to 50$...
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136096
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822144544
However, there is two problems with this.
1. They are refurbed, and from what reviews on the Western show, I bet I might get a DOA.
2. The Maxtor has mixed ideas on locking and unlocking. I can't tell which is legit or not.
http://xboxdrives.x-pec.com/?p=list&v_brand=&v_modelnum=5A320J0&v_size=&v_rpm=&v_buffersize=&v_locking=&v_version=&v_postedby=

Now, the other hard drives on there (the WDs on the top of Newegg's search for "ide hard drive") are more than 50$, and my budget here for this product is a bit below 100$ US. And with mixed reviews and ideas, what am I going to do?

And, where is a nice price for the kit with the memory card + softmod files? Do I just get lucky off of ebay? I'll probably try to get something below 20.

So, all together, it's perfect, that is, when at the time I find a ebay bid and if the hard drive works.

So...any ideas? What should I change?

^^ it seems you've got it bagged BAR the hdd part! (possibly an mc also)
shipping such fragile parts is hazardous (goes without saying) and too costly to YOU, the end user!
refurbished hdds are never a good idea unless you trust 100% the source...
distros are another issue and the budget is catch 22 for what you want!
1, security/peace of mind the items reach you safely.. (pay more)...or...
2, expediency/reduced costs..it makes sense but...(pay less)
paying for something that takes half your budget away in the worst case scenario shouldn't be an option! i doubt you want to lose money!
..........
play it safe and shop around more.. ask a LOCAL computer parts stockist if they can source any reasonable priced/sized ide hdds? you may have to "pay" a little more than expectations but HE is the one that foots the fuckup bill beforehand, as in....you're walking/driving to the shop to pick it up in person so no droppage chances in transit!
.........................
if i was in your boots, i'd shop locally first, somewhere within a light journey by vehicle at best! check the local rags and pawn shops for computers/parts and the like! (you'd be surprised what you find there)
if going with the stockist route, CHECK hdd compatibility first (drive geometry/manufacture #)
the mc you should be able to find much easier online than a SAFE ide REFURBISHED hdd! Confused (at least mc's aren't that fragile and costly)
..........................
another option is a SATA hdd via an ide to sata converter but you'll need to look into that if you can be arsed? compatibility of hdd and converter board, the usual! (i'm a bit fried atm)
sata hdds are much cheaper than ide hdds as ide is no longer catered for...we're on limited stocks now....IDE = RETROGRADE!
..................
sorry i went on but you seem to have all else covered....and the thread didn't get a reply....(bar mine)...YET!
don't pay any mind if you don't want to....WELCOME OPTIONAL LAND! WHERE BURPS ARE FARTS AND FARTS ARE BURPS! THE CHOICE IS YOURS!

Well, I doubt I can just walk around my town and find a hard drive like that. Really, I think these refurbs are my only hope if I don't want to waste money by moving around everywhere. I think I'm pretty lucky, so if it doesn't come right, I'll have to just not use the CD/half of the things, so I might as well get it early.

Newegg is pretty trusted, I believe. It's a nice site.

You can get them cheaper non-refurbished on sites like eBay. It's isn't unreliable and you get lots of discounts off of more official sites like Newegg.

I've heard of issues with SATA-IDE converters in Xboxes. You may have to do some research or wait for somebody to post about which can be used an which can't. I've heard of some guys having HDDs as big as 2TB with the SATA converters.

@Prehistoricman

It is possible to use 2TB hard drives, but that is the max amount in the xbox.

Here's a video of someone using a SATA drive on an xbox:

Are the SATA converters easy to put in? I want this process to be as easy as possible, for myself. Razz

So, Ebay is reliable for this situation? Well, then I will have to try to be lucky.
Again. Rolling Eyes
Well, hopefully I can trust Ebay if you guys are right about the refurbs.

^^ i'm not commenting on e-gay but i did find THIS ide to sata converter!
should help resolve one compatibility issue? (the one i'm using is different but to the same effect! 200g sata WD is on mine)
as for the rest, there's plenty in the tutorial areas and old threads!
Cool

Pretty sure this thread is solved. Hope I'm lucky, as I have no solder experience.

^^ huh?! dunno what to make of the above? Confused
is that sarcasm or a compliment?
i'll see it as the latter!
hope you get a painless experience to parts acquisition! (and usage)
the ide to sata converter DOESN'T require any soldering...just plug and play!

Stay away from SATA, many do not support low level eeprom locking, also you will take a hit performance wise in comparison to using a 7200RPM IDE.

Things you should add to your list
1)Rite-k manufactured DVD-r's (Maxell, Memorex, Verbatim, TDK)
2)AutoBuilder 5.1
3)XBMC Installer 3.2.2

1. I got a stack of those. That's where I got the DVD-R with Memorex on it Wink
2/3: Torrent please? I think things download better when I torrent it, as when I'm downloading on Chrome it usually stops somewhere around 120 gbs most of the time. If not, should I just download over night or something? Also, I can't find XBMC Installer 3.2.2 anywhere. Link?

Direct downloads should work just fine. If it doesn't specify what problems you are having with the downloads. Is the completed download corrupt etc?

SPPV XBMC Installer 3.2.2

http://www.xbox-hq.com/html/modules.php?name=Downloads&d_op=viewdownloaddetails&lid=1406

This purpose of the program is to install a Unleash, EvolutionX or Xbox media center. It does not do hard drive upgrades for you.

For hard drive upgrades use Autobuilder 5.1 (an improved version of xboxhdm!)

http://www.xbox-hq.com/html/download-file-1401.html

Just respond if you have trouble downloading them

Honestly, now when I think about it, I actually think it will go out fine. It used to do that when my internet disconnected every 10 minutes during games.

Also, what's the difference between XBMC installer and AID?
