Hi, I just had some questions.
Is a 7200 rpm hard drive safe in an Xbox? In other words, are there possible issues of it overheating the Xbox or the hard drive itself getting too hot?
Also, I would like to confirm whether I have a v1.6 or v1.6b Xbox. My Xbox was manufactured 10-22-2004.
Also, is there anything to worry about when it comes to getting a 500gb+ hard drive. I read somewhere(don't remember where) about a guy who filled up his 500gb+ hard drive up to around 230gb and it started messing up or something like that because he didn't set up the clusters right? If any of that rings a bell.
In addition, I bought an Xbox to USB adapter, but I didn't realize the female USB port would be v1.0 or v1.1(I don't know which it is). Could anybody point me in the right direction in finding a compatible USB drive?
I have a sandisk cruzer 4gb that I was going to try to use... Maybe I could get a female 2.0 to male 1.0/1.1 adapter...
Also, I don't have a desktop computer. If I have a v1.6b Xbox, do you think the Chimp v1.6 Xbox tutorials will still work?
Also, what's the cleanest dashboard that you think there is? I really like the original Xbox dashboard(in terms of design, looks, sounds, etc.). Is there anything extremely similar to it? To put it crudely, I just don't want my new dashboard to look 'ghetto'(or the start up either). I don't care too much about features. I think all I'm going to do is back up my Xbox games to my hard drive.
Thanks!

7200 RPM is fine. Manufacture date wont tell you 1.6 or b you need to check the RAM to confirm that, but its inconsequential. They re identical just one uses Samsung brand RAM the other Hynix brand. Chimp 1.6 will work fine whether its a 1.6,b or c.
Any thumbdrive 4GB or less is fine (to a certain degree) 99% are backwards compatable with the USB1/1.1 protocol. Only issue you may have is some dont format FATX proper. For best results use an SD/USB adapter and SD card. Ive never seen an SD that didnt work.
Dashboard either use UnleashX (my fav) or XBMC. If you want similar to MS Dash you want UnleashX with the default skin.

Thanks for the answers, SPPV.
Do you know if there's any issues with having a 500gb+ hard drive though? Sorry, I forget where I read this or what the issue was exactly, but I think it had something to do with setting up the memory clusters to 32kb or 64kb. I know that's so nebulous...
Also, I think I've read that it doesn't matter what the mb cache is on your hard drive to a certain point, like 2mb or 8mb or something like that. Is that true?

Just like a PC the higher the cache the better as it will allow for faster acces but a 2MB cache is fine. I think the HDD I use has a 4MB cache (250GB Seagate 7200RPM) and works fine.
As for the other question you can use an HDD up to 2TB you just need to be sure to format the partitions with the proper cluster size. Chances are buddy didnt use the proper size which caused it to shit the bed. This is common and not bug or anything like that just a mistake on the part of the man who built the HDD.
With a 500GB to know for sure you are kosher and do it easily you wat to use AutoBuilder. It will create, format and populate your C,E and F partitions. Then when you put the HDD in your XBOX go into the UnleashX system menu and enable G and format it.

Just a question regarding the partitions:
Since I have a 500 GB HDD, too, I will have to enable G, too, right?
So I went to UnleashX system menu and enabled the G Drive.
Then I restarted the Xbox for the changes to take effect and then I went to format menu and chose "Format G Drive".
I said ok do it and then it asked me to press ok.
I did so but nothing happened:
In my top left corner of my skin it still says C ...GB free, E ...GB free, F ...GB free. But no G.
I already have several games copied to F, could that cause the problem?
Or do I have to run XBpartitioner (will this delete my saved games)?

Go back to the system menu and make sure G is enabled, then try formatting it again. If that fails just use XBPartitioner to format G. You wont have to touch the other partitions. Size isnt a factor since you can have partitions just shy of 1TB.

I just tried again to manually format the G Drive and it failed again.
Before I now run XBpartitioner I'd like to ask a thing:
Please excuse if I am missinterprating your post but you said "size isn't a factor": So do I even need G? And if so, could you shortly explain why?
Didn't really understand that yet...

^^ size isn't a factor for G:/ volume so you can leave the earlier volume sizes at their default states..(approx default partition sizes)
Code:
C:/ 350m N/A FIXED (os partition)
D:/ VOID (dvd rom)
E:/ 4g N/A FIXED (user partition)
F:/ up to 126g (custom partition, adjustable through XBPARTITIONER, best left at default if you slam a 500g ide in)
G:/ up to 126g by default, adjustable through XBPARTITIONER
X:/ 750m N/A FIXED (cache partition)
Y:/ 750m ^^
Z:/ 750m ^^
...so i would guess the post above you meant you can leave ALL the other partitions and adjust only the G:/ volume through XBPARTITIONER to take up the remainder of the hdd capacity after the earlier default volumes? (G:/ would be over 350g easy)
........
definitely something i need to look into at some point...
well, this was LATE on my part wasn't it?
....................
[edit]....my bad
size isn't a factor for the F:/ and G:/ volumes...
(but if you're still green at this, stick with the path of least resistance and just alter the G:/ volume) _________________ to all my friends... farewell and all the best to future prosperity... and remember, be excellent to each other!

I think I am to dumb for this lol.
Could someone guide me just in a few words through this partition adjustement?
Just for the info (so you know what I'm talking about):
-I already enanbled G and have ~380 GB on F left. But G doesn't show up yet->that's why I'm going to use XBpartitioner-
So and when I now run XBpartitioner, I basically don't know what to do.
But well, I can tell what happens when I keep pressing A:
-Not having pressed anything, it only shows the 6th place with ~360GB. which is the default setting I use right now, of course.
-When I press A one time, it shows ~120 on the 6th place and ~340 on the 7th place, which I guess is the right option to chose (dunno ^^).
-When I press A again, it shows ~230 on the 6th and ~230 on the 7th.
-And pressing A again results in ~120 on the 6th place, which seems to be bullshit.
Sorry for having to ask about such a probably simple procedure, but again: I don't what to mess things up.
Thanks people for helping me out!

yes 120-340 is proper. That will give you your regular stock partitons, put 120GB to partition 6(F) and 340GB to partition 7(G)

I just succesfully distributed the space: 120(F)-340(G).
Unfortunetly I deleted my games saved so far on F .
Luckily it aint soooo bad because it where only ~10, but what have i done "wrong"? I mean I do had to format the partitions in order to distribute the HDD space, right?
I thought I could manage it without deleting my stuff...
Two more questions:
My skin tells me I have more space on the partitions than File Explorer says.
When I go to FE it says 123 on F and 345 on G.
My skin in return says 129 on F and 362 on G.
Dafuq? ^^
And one more general thing:
I do now have complete use of the HDD, right?
So i can fill up F and G as much as I want without screwing anything up?

^^ i can't account for the skin readout discrepancy, i'm not rocking that large of an hdd...(yet) but stick with the "filebrowser" readout as it deals in...well, handling files and measuring the hdd capacity as used!
...........
if you plan on filling both the F:/ and G:/ volumes, leave roughly a "G" remaining partition capacity for each!
i've filled TO CAPACITY my F:/ volume and things didn't run smooth, kept choking the xbox up in gameplay...i just removed the last added file (which was a movie clip 1.2g mkv 720p) and the issue seemed to remedy itself!
i'm not the expert on these things and i dig through the forums of various places, filling the custom partitions to capacity and it causing problems is documented!
i didn't pay much notice til i tried filling it up myself...now i know better through experience! (not to fill it up all the way, leave roughly a G)
......
you'd think that's what the pagefile/cache is for but again, i'm not the expert here!
(perhaps some file buffering going on? the skin readout? dunno, not using a hdd that large, maybe somebody who is can answer your questions on that?)
(SO late i'm actually from the future)

[edit]...
if you was successful in distributing the hdd partition capacities and you formatted the partitions since, then yes..it's normal to lose EVERYTHING on the formatted volumes! will be safe to use as intended if all steps are complete!
(format/repartition on any platform is destructive to data but not the hdd...the partition/format tool will notify you of data loss should you proceed) _________________ to all my friends... farewell and all the best to future prosperity... and remember, be excellent to each other!

Understand.
I actually changed my skin now to "green shapes by kthulu" because it shows the right space (same like FE, which one can trust).
Well, some skins do not, maybe they are confused because of the great HDD capacity or something...
Anyways:
What would you consider a correct space to leave free?
Just don't go !20/120 and 340/340, right?
Well I'll not make it suffer...
Having lost my files on F aint so bad, as I said, I should have distributed the partitions BEFORE saving things .
Gonna remember that for the future.
Thanks for the feedback, mate!
Do I have to watch anything else or am I good for now?
Sooo enjoying this console .

^^ basically, yes!
just leave a "G" or so on the custom partitions and you're golden!
you've covered all angles as far as i can tell, don't think you need to "look" out for anything bar what you want of the console...
...........
enjoy that beast!
