Post subject: How to use the Autobuilder version of xboxhdm

Hello SPPV,

I got lucky there's a computer shop down the street where the staff let me use a disassembled desktop that has plugs for both SATA and PATA hard drives!

I plugged in the molex power cable and the far end of the IDE cable (the master connector) into my 320GB Western Digital PATA HDD.

I turned on the computer, opened the disk drive and put in the DVD-R linux.iso I made with autobuilder. Then I closed the drive and powered down the desktop.

When I powered up the desktop again it booted straight to your version of xboxhdm.

The first option #1 said 'Pimped' I hit '1' on the keyboard.

Then the monitor shows:
"boot: 1
Loading /isolinux/fatxImage.........
Loading initrd.gz........."

some and some other stuff then finally gets to the part where it says:
"At the command-line type 'xboxhd' to start the tool"
then some stuff about 'xbrowser' and 'reboot' and 'poweroff'

Then it gives me a prompt to type a command:

When it got me here I tried typing in '1' here like you suggested.

All it said next was: 'command not found'

So I tried typing in 'xboxhd' to see what would happen.

The program tried doing some sort of search then said:
"Linux Cd not found!"

You said that to put emulators on a linux.iso disk I would need to use a DVD-R in order to hold so many files.

Is your autobuilder version of xboxhdm getting confused because a DVD-R
rather than a CD-R is in the disk drive?

What else could be the problem? How autobuilder was used originally to create the iso? (I burned the linux.iso to a DVD-R using mac's disk utility at a burn speed of 4x, which is actually safer than 8x, so that should not be the problem).

The desktop brand was a 'General Nanosystems' one made by that computer store and not a Dell or HP tower.

If answering by forum seems too tedious, do you think it would be possible to make a tutorial video for users (like me) who wanted to put emulators on their linux.iso disk for their hard drive upgrades? Skype works for me too, I sent a message to you a week or so ago on there, but you probably won't see it unless we're both logged in simultaneously.

Otherwise answering on here is fine.

Thanks again for your help

Thanks for the video link that helps a little bit.

Well at 7:53 in the video where you type 'xboxhd' my screen basically attempted to search for the linux disk or the HDD connected to the master end of the IDE cable.

There's a few possibilities:

1.)I was confused about which connector on an IDE cable is the master which I doubt since I know that:

http://www.asrock.com/support/faq/20061020-01.jpg

I know the one end of the cable that has two plugs near each other are the master and slave. The master is one the end just at the tip of the ribbon cable.

2.) I did not plug in the Molex or IDE ribbon cable into the hard drive pins all the way. Could that be a reason for why Autobuilder's xboxhdm program said "Linux-CD" not found?

3.) The program has not been tested much for users like me who want to install emus packaged with UnleashX (with XBMC as an app). Is that true?

You mentioned in the other forum that a CD-R would not have enough memory to store all the Xbox's drives' contents, its EEPROM file AND all those emus. You said I would need to burn linux.iso to a DVD-R disk instead. Still true?

4.) Something about the particular Desktop tower didn't work.
I wouldn't even know where to troubleshoot with that.

I'll probably just need to purchase a cheap tower at goodwill or something on my own anyways since the file transfers take >1hr and that computer shop probably doesn't want me staying in there that long lol

My main concern is that there is a bug in autobuilder or I did something wrong when creating it (more likely).

AutoBuilder is fully tested for installing apps and emus. Thats the only way I use it. Master has nothing to do with the IDE cable and all to do with th jumper settings. Also make sure you are hooked to the Primary channel. As for linux cd not found thats usualy caused by shitty media or not using the proper burn speed

Sounds like something with the BIOS settings when booting to the linux.iso program was giving me trouble then. I'm just going to need to shell out another $40 if I want this done right I suppose.

In the meantime let me verify the type of media used and burn speed was sufficient.

The DVD-R disk was a TDK 16x disk. I burned linux.iso at a burn speed of 4x instead of 8x because slower burn speeds provide better analog to digital conversion (if my understanding is correct). I used a burn speed of 4x when I made an autoinstaller disk a while back as well.

Is there a problem with the DVD-R brand I used?

Burn it at 8x with imgburn. I state those speeds specifically in the instructions for a reason lol

I don't think using mac disk utility as an iso burner is a big deal. It can verify a disk image and plenty of sites say it works fine. Heck I did use it to burn AID 4.50 to a DVD-R popped it into my softmodded xbox and it worked fine.

Naturally you did not test burning using disk utility, so I understand why you wouldn't recommend it.

As far as burning speeds, I've heard slower is usually better, but I just found some forums online that contradict it.

So I'll redo it and burn on mac disk utility at 8x.

If you think it matters significantly I'll find a windows computer with Imgburn and use it.

I'll put it in perspective for you. For maye 3 years or so Ive been making the HDM version of AID (Pimped then AutoBuilder). Over the course of that time Ive had I think 4 different towers and around 8 different DVD-ROM/BurnersO I used. A few would recognise DVDs I burned with Nero Windows etc and at various speeds. Maye half the towers and drives would boot (same for CD-r) But EVERY tower and EVERY drive would oot fine using Rite-K DVD-r ImgBurn and 8X or Philips CD-r 24X and ImgBurn

Like I aid I say what I say for AutoBuilder cause I wrote it and the settings are what I got 100% succes on. If people follow the burn instructions for my aps whe they get an error it alows me to remove an apect and gives a higher chance of finding the true culprit.

But if Im forced to battle through people not following the instructions I put in the Read Me description and troubleshooting Im forced to go in vanilla and it also chaps my nuts cuse what I said 3 times got ignored. And that doesnt make me a happy camper, I dont say what I say to be cool, its because thats how it needs to be done

Alrighty then if it helps you track down a problem (assuming there was one in first place) then I'll just try imgburn at 4x to burn my linux.iso to a DVD-R.

The brand of DVD-R was fine with you correct?

No problem don't get mad Smile

I'm not some kid who doesn't listen then call you a homosexual or anything lol

I honestly thought lower burning speeds were best practice, but I've learned that's not the case. Lesson learned.

I'll let you know what happens with the burning. First I'm going to hunt down a cheap tower of my own first Smile

Im not mad lol. I just figured I needed to put 8x 94 trillion times since I say it 3 times in the read me/description and you burned at 4x and then said you were gonna burn 4X again. Its always best to follow instruction to a tee, if you go off halfcocked we got a butt load of possible culprits wen you get an error, you follow instructions and we have a very narrow set of possibilities if you get an error Trust me on this, Ive been doing XBOX a decade, using HDM a decade. 8x is the best speed for a DVD-r. When you go below or above that speed uless you have top of the line DVD drive you get read errors. I dont know why I just know it to be true after 40 billion HDM discs over the years. Pity Elektro cleaned up the comments at TIZ, had a guy who decided to burn a CD-r at 16x then fter bashing my skull ff the wall for days ealing with his mouthy BS he burned at 24X and it worked perfect Im not saying your mouthy lol just its virtualy the same scenario

My HP tower came with a Benq DVD burner and it will spit out any 4x disc, doesnt matter if its HDM or a movie. My Pioneer drive (cost like $100) reads em fine but majority of people have 30 buck burners, and they tend to hve issues with the lower speed. That and my testing, and testing by my Beta group lead me to say 3 times in my instructions specific speeds because they got 100% results

If you look at my Troubleshooting I say Linux-CD not found is caused by shitty media or improper burn speeds. And it is. Ive literaly had my AutoBuilder app downloaded over 10,000 times between the various builds and everytime this error came up they either used shitty no namer media or didnt follow my burn speeds. TDK is made by Rite-K so its quality no issues there, but 4x is a problem. You would see the same issue with a CD-r burned at 16x (sems the most common speed) They only boot proper at 24x.

Ive never used Mac (always saw em as overpriced PCs with lame apps and games, nobody codes for em its all Winblows and Linux) But I have used many Winblow burners over the years and hands down, no questions asked Imgburn is the best.By far. I can only say in my instructions what myself ad testers got 100% results with. If you look through the history of Pimped/AutoBuilder Im very anal on it and if even 1 person reported a problem I could recreate and verify I would take the time to isolate te isue and release a new build with a fix for it

Hmm now that you mention it, it would be a good idea for me to read more of your documentation.

Do you have any other instructions or detailed manuals that explain the different features or your installers and hdm programs in depth besides the 'readme' files that are packaged with the downloads?

That might reduce the amount of questions I ask lol.

The autoinstaller deluxe manual was great to read, even though it's outdated and you suggested I not use the program anymore

If there isn't any extra documentation, that's fine, just thought I'd ask.

Thats why I make videos. Between my current image buid videos and the HDM portion of the vid above its all there. And my instructions if followed are all anybody needs. Problem is people dont read em. And if they skip a 1 page instruction their not gonna read a book like the AID manual which just makes it a huge waste of my time

People just try to make it more complicated than it needs to be or decide they know how to use my apps better than me so ignore my instructions

Dont get me wrong I like to help people and love what I do, thats why Im here. But the surefire way for someone to frost my nuts is to not read or follow the instructions for my apps. I go out of my way to make them as easy as possible which in a lot of cases obviates the need for a huge ass 90 page manual. Plus Im a firm believer in video tuts as oppose to written.
