Post subject: Backing Up KOTOR Save Files?

Hi, sorry if this question has been asked alot, but does anyone know of a way to back up your KOTOR save files? I don't really care to mod my Xbox; I'm just looking for a way to back up all my save files, in case my Xbox's HDD dies.

That being said, I am willing to mod it for a short time, just to get the files off the Xbox through FTP. From what I've read though, it seems that KOTOR is locked to the specific hard drive that it comes from, and that the only way to get around that is by resigning the save files or something like that. That's where I get lost on that point. On forums here and there, there's people saying that they were going to do this, but it seems they don't come back to inform the reader whether it worked or not.

If anybody could help me out here, that would be great.

Thanks.

Mod the XBOX then FTP in and copy off the UDATA folder.

And modded is way better than non modded. Live is dead you have nothing to lose and everything to gain by modding

Is modding an Xbox legal?

Also, I've heard that KOTOR is locked to the specific hard drive that it comes from. Is this not true?

Sort of like Burnout, PSO, and all the Team Ninja games.

Nope its worse than murder, FBI will kick down your door within minutes of performing the mod and drag you off to the Florida Death Row.LMFAO

You wanna back em up its how you do it. You own the XBOX its your choice if you want their BIOS or our BIOS.

Kids today. Is it legal? Thought Id heard it all.

Its what you do after modding it that dictates legality. Using it to play pirate copies of XBOX games not legal. Using it as a regular XBOX to play your legaly purchased XBOX games, to run XBMC so you can use it as a media center, and to play emulators like NeoGenesis (Sega V Accolade lawsuit) is legal. Whats not legal is if we were to try to sell NeoGenesis without giving sega royalties for use of their SDK and name. And modding will not ruin your saves its still the same hard drive still the same eeprom key. If you decide to upgrade the HDD the saves should still work fine as the new HDD will be using the original HDD eeprom key. If you want to use em on a friends XBOX you wil eed to use the KOTOR Game Save Editor

Its the truth, nothing illegal about modding an XBOX. Theres been rulings in USA, Canada and UK all affirming the rights of the owner (you) to jailbreak or mod your cellphone or console. Under most countries copyright laws we have the legal right to make a backup of our games. M$ in blatant disregard for the end users rights tries to prevent this by locking the console. We bypass that simply by using a bit of code that caches the BIOS and patches the public key to remove the digital signature requirement.

All they can do is ban you from Live (which is moot being dead since 2010 and all) and terminate your warranty (again moot as there isnt a single XBOX left with a valid warranty, they expired years ago) So you are doing nothing wrong, nor losing anything, simply exercising your rights as the console and media owner.

Thats why we've been around for a decade now, if M$ actualy had a legal basis to come after us for making and distributing the software to accomplish this we'd have been shut down years ago. But they dont, they know it and we know it. Thats why instead they try to bribe various governments into passing draconian Berlinesque circa 1941 laws. They succeeded here in Canada and it lasted about 5 minutes before the Supreme Court struck the law down as infringing on our rights.

Your is it legal question made me laugh (choked on a shot of vodka) so I figured a humorous response was in order. And if you hang around here to learn about XBOX, youll find I joke around a lot and usualy poke some humour into my posts.

Hey guys I figure'd I'd step in here and throw in a post,

SPPV is exactly right, if you mod your console to simple download a file of an xbox game you do not own from the internet and load onto your console to play, that WOULD be illegal.

Modifying an xbox in order to say use it a simple Linux computer is completely legal. In fact the first people to try and hack an xbox were doing exactly that.

Read the wikipedia page about Andrew Huang and his famous book "Hacking the Xbox" where he discusses the ethics of hacking. The introduction is a great read about legality of modding.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andrew_Huang

M$ did not want people to mod a console simply to use it as a computer because that would mean those individuals would not be interested in purchasing the many xbox 1 games they sold at an overinflated price.

That's because M$ practices a sales promotion called loss leader:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Loss_leader

It means they sell their consoles at a price cheaper than its true worth, then charge more on games to make up the money they initially lost.

If M$ did not do that the consoles would have costed more money and drive away potential customers. On the other hand by selling an underpriced console, if a smart Linux hacker comes by and figures out how to use the Xbox as just a regular computer, then M$ would have lost money on that person.

Does that all make sense SunshineDrip?

Yes, thank you for the wealth of information you two.

Lol, I hope I didn't hinder your inebriation too much SPPV. I was just curious about the legality of it all. Which both of you satisfied that inquiry wonderfully. Despite the ease with which software piracy is accomplished, and the console modifications sometimes utilized to achieve that end, I do like to know what I'm doing.

I might mod my Xbox. Could you point me in the right direction in terms of tutorials/videos on how to go about it, in case I do?
