Welp, after successfully FTP'ing into the box with the aid of the awesomely detailed tutorial here, and having it work just tickety-boo for a couple of months, FTP is suddenly not working for me. I've used both Qwix, Filezilla, and FlashFXP equally successfully, but suddenly while unpacking/FTPing with QWIX I got a directory listing error. I can connect to the box, but when trying to actually browse around I get the error. I tried FZ again today, and got as far as a directory listng showing all the partitions (man, there' a lot), but if I try to actually open the f or g dives, wham, directory listing error. I disabled PASV altogether, upped the timeout to 60s - nada. I also uninstalled McAffee firewall, as that had caused problems in the past, but still no joy. Is there anything else I can do in terms of diagnosing and solving the problem? Kinda need to find an answer as the DVD seems to have finally truly died, so I'm left with no other way to get stuff on the box. HELP!

Try to FTP on more than one computer. Then we will know if it is a local problem (on the computer) or an Xbox problem. _________________

Okay, was able to get a hold of another laptop to test the connection. Surprise! It looks like the problem is my main laptop - Qwix is happily FTPing over a game now on the other machine. So, that said, where can I start looking for problems? Oh, and is it possible to replace an XBOX DvD drive? Cause that thing seems to finally have joined the choir invisible. Cheers!!!!

Do you still have a firewall?

Oh, also should mention that I'm connecting via a crossover, using the settings in the "advanced ftp" tutorial found here. Firewall is gone, and the Win7 firewall is off. I did have a problem with the shitty McAfee firewall first, but it wouldn't do ANY list at all before I turned it off. Now it does an initial list, but won't list contents of each drive, nor can transfer to the xbox. Given that, I didn't think it was still the firewall, but flat out I know pretty much JS about networking, so.....?
The DVD..Oi, the DVD...well, for years it's been grinding, reading slowly, and periodically coming up with disc errors. I should also mention this is a VERY first version box, even before MS started displaying error codes when the machine fails to boot properly, so it's probably a Thompson s drive, and is definitely aging. Those errors have steadily increased over the years, and now it's got to the point where DVD2XBOX can't consistently recognize the disc, nor can the box read anything. A new wrinkle is I've started seeing the 'stuttering drive tray' in the last two days when the thing opens (but not closing for some reason...hmmmm).
For now my workaround is to backup the ISO image I want to deal with to DVD, and QWIX FTP from that disc to the XBOX on the other laptop. It' not ideal though, and doesn't solve the problem of trying to backup my library of commercial games to the HDD, which means right now, ironically, my purchased games are the ones that can't be played

Do you want a working, 1.6 version Thompson? I've got one spare I won't be using.
I've found FTPing over crossover nothing by problematic. It never actually worked, at all. If you can use it all connected to a router, that would be ideal and would mean you didn't have to change 101 settings every time you wanted to transfer anything. _________________

If it didnt work Prehistoricman it means you messed up somewhere. Ive used cross-over for years no issue. Best advice I can give is to to plug the XBOX into the PC you are using (ethernet or cross-over, this only works if running wireless or have 2 ethernet ports) Then click on network connection-Properties-Sharing and check off the box that says allow other PCs to connect via this internet connection. This will turn the PC into a pseudo router and assign an IP to the XBOX, then use IE to FTP. Simply open Internet Explorer, in the address bar type FTP://XBOX's IP address and hit enter, for user name and password type in xbox. when it opens the route directory click on Page (top right corner in XP) and hit open FTP site in Windows Explorer. It will now treat the XBOX HDD like any old HDD plugged into your PC allowing you to copy and paste, rename, delete etc. If this fails then I would recomend making a USB adapter or wiring a USB into port 4 and using it to copy Emu Installler, XBMC Installer or any other of my installer apps to the HDD and run it then try. If again failure sows its face, when you boot one of my apps click on AVA and try. If this fails it means your XBOX pardon my Punjabi is fucked and its time for a reinstall. Copy XBMC Installer to HDD, replace the config.xml with the one found in the Music folder and click the XBE. now hit Re-Do Softmod. Let it do its thing, if you get an error at the end, no worries it just means it found an eeprom backup in your UDATA folder and refused to overwrite it, but the actual SID5.12 softmod has been installed.

Never tried that before. I always messed with the computer's IP settings to manually get the computer to be a router. Anyway, crossover wouldn't be convenient for me :/ Good advice if I ever need it though :) _________________
