If you decide to steal the drive from your other Xbox it is as easy as unplugging the old one and plugging in the new one. The original Xbox doesn't have the firmware keys and all that other messy stuff like the Xbox 360 has.
As for your Xbox, does the tray try to open and then get stuck? My 1.0 does that and usually if I just hit the top of the Xbox where the DVD drive is the disc drive will open. If that does cause it to open, then it could be the rubber bands slipping inside or the magnet inside of the DVD drive holding on too strongly. _________________

You can boil the band for a few minutes to shrink it down so it will be tight again. You can also use the manual hole to force it open, or leave a blank disc in it so that it will open.
These are all things I do with Samsung drives which are terrible for sticking

If none of the above work (which they probably will), you can look for a post I made a while back about my drive. I ended up putting some tape on the upper part of the spindle to give it some space to weaken the magnetism. _________________

I also have an HL - data, nice drive, they read DVD+RW
Note: The cut out for opening manually is not cut correctly on the chassis of the drive. If you press something in the whole it will hit the Chassis. You need to take the drive out and manually make the hole bigger. You will understand once you open it up and look at it.
Also beware of putting things on the spindle as Prehistoricman says. I followed his post and the drive started giving read errors afterwards... This could just be for the H-L data drives as I did it with a Samsung and it read fine. After I removed the plastic on the H-L in now reads fine again (I had a very thin piece of plastic on, surprised it caused problems).
However, you say it won't open with a cd in the drive already... in that case you are going to have to open the drive and see what is happening inside, could be a broken rubber band or motor...
