I will be using a software-modded original xbox, and I plan to connect it to my receiver as all my a/v equipment is running through my receiver via HDMI and then out to the HDTV via HDMI
My problem is, I have only 2 optical in jacks on my receiver, and they are both being used already. But I have the component HD cables for the xbox which includes both standard audio cables (left/right) and also optical. I thought I was going to be using optical but I just don't have a free jack for it. So, is there any benefit to using the optical audio for the original xbox if I will only be playing original xbox games and emulators?
I won't be using the xbox for any media playback so I am wondering if I will be missing out on any surround by playing games only via the standard audio cables. Would optical give me any improvement over standard cables regarding xbox games and emulators? Did original xbox games even use dolby digital surround?

I'm a bit of a cable fiend so I like to have the best output on all my consoles audio and video-wise. if you're stuck for optical inputs and your receiver happens to have a coaxial input you can get cheap optical - coaxial converters on epay. I picked one up when one of my optical inputs died and I found it worked really well. Do your research though to ensure that the unit will be converting full surround and not just surround - stereo (I've read reports on units only doing that, I lucked out and got a good one).
Another option I took advantage of is componant and hdmi assign options. My receiver, a Sony, allows you to assign inputs to different locations on the receiver (ex. you can make HDMI 1 be accessed when you press CD. This can get very confusing but I managed to hook every one of my consoles to my Sony receiver when it seemed impossible without assigning.

Thanks for the replies. I had no idea there were optical>coaxial converters available. I'm looking at several now. That sounds like it might be the answer for me if I decide I want to go with the digital audio. Thanks for the info!

danff, again, be careful when buying an optical - coaxial converter. Like I mentioned, I've read reviews, websites, etc. that say some converter merely send through the R/L stereo sound not full surround...obviously you don't want one of them. Like I said, I lucked out and got a good one. Make sure you do your research and if you're ebaying, etc, make sure you contact the seller first and make sure the unit does what you need it to. That way you're covered for a return if you get it and it doesn't! Good luck!
