Post subject: Destroyed my HD

Hello there,

I think I have ruined my HD in the XBox. I tried a clean install of EvolutionX. However, the power was switched of before I completed the process. To be more precise: the XBox got switched of after formatting and before restoring the backup.

I made a full backup of C and E before starting the process.

Now, the XBox will not boot from the CDR like previously. Moreover, it will not boot from other, previously used CDR's and DVD's. The only ones it will boot from are orignal game DVD's.
Everytime I boot, the XBox comes with error 13 or 14 - depending on the CD I put in.
The same applies if I replace the original HD with an ol WD400BB.

The bios is Evox M7 - if memory serves me right.
I'm not sure if this means that it's equiped with a TSOP mod or a hardware based mod.

How can I fix this so that it will boot with the Evolution dashboard?

Grtz - Will

You can use your back up eeprom and rebuild the HD with xboxHDM.

Thanks for the quick response!

Not sure what you mean with "backup eeprom"? How do I access that?

To my knowledge, the xboxHDM approach requires the HD to be installed in a regular PC. Right?

Could you point me to a manual or something that describes this into more detail?
I have never been in this situation. So this area is quite new for me.

http://www.xbox-hq.com/html/xbox-tutorials-153.html there is the guide and the eeprom should have been backed up when you installed the softmod.

There is folder called 'backup'.
In it are 5 files:
1. bios.bin
2. disk.bin
3. eeprom.bin
4. hddinfo.txt
5. hddkey.bin

Is the eeprom.bin the backup you are referring to?

I'm stuck now.
I unlocked the original HD. First used hdunlock. After a reboot, the HD was locked again.
Than I did hdunlock and hddisabl. After reboot, the unlock was still there.
Next I followed the steps from the procedure you pointed out to me.

However, for some reason, the drive shows as 'frozen'.
And I can not lock it anymore.

Is there a way around that?

Yep - so I noticed.
I tried with an old PC based on a NF4 chipset.
All drives had the F-bit turned off.

Going further with the next step...

The next step/challenge.

I was able to partition, format and restore the original drive and another WD of 40 GB.

If I install one of these in the XBox, the system 'hangs' with the large XBox logo on the screen.
Nothing more. No error message - nothing.
Putting a bootable DVD or CD doesn't help.
Starting a FTP session doesn't work either.

What could be wrong here?
And how can I fix this?

Thanks for the help and tips sofar!!!

Since the behaviour of the xbox changed during the steps in the proces, I assume it's "only" a matter of putting the right content in C.

So what should be the bare minimum for C (and E?) for being able to boot? Keep in mind that this xbox has a softmod.

Use the link i gave you and start agen.

C drive and E drive are mayed when you softmod...

Dont touch C and E drive.

You mess C and E drive up...as in delite some files.

Then ure softmod may not work.

I tried the steps you suggested.
After that, the xbox hangs @ the big X.
It doesn't matter if I put in a CD or a DVD from which it can boot.

How can a softmod fail when files are deleted from the HD? And even if so, if I know what files should be in there, I should be able to boot the thing.
Or am I overlooking something here?

Also, I found this:
http://forums.llamma.com/viewtopic.php?t=9685
Here, it's instructed to delete everything from drive C and E. And copy some dashfiles to C.
After which the xbox can be softmod-ded. Or install a new dash with AID.
I will give this a try. And see where it brings me.

I have never delited C and E drives.

The softmod will not work if you delite C and E drives.

The E drive holds ure eeprom ..Without the eeprom the softmod will not run.

Have you downloaded Auto-Installer.Deluxe.?

Ther is a file in Auto-Installer.Deluxe called a PDF file. This is a manual and it will tell you how to softmod...Properly.
