I've installed a softmod using SID 5.10 in a stock v1.1 xbox, with the excellent USB SID installer, to get XBMC as my dash, dvd2xbox, and some other extras. Looks great, works well, so far so good.
Because the stock HDD is still in there now I'd like to install chimp to sort out a larger HDD, and emulators and other apps to add to the flexibility. Enter AID 4.52, which I've burnt onto a DVD-RW disk.
I restart the xbox, and the AID 4.52 disk starts up, all looks fine. However when I try to install any applications it consistently fails. A dialog box comes up with a status bar, to show Extracting progress, which remains on 0%, and then an Error dialog box comes up a few seconds afterwards with no content (ie an empty dialog).
I've tried to install other things, and have tried burning a new DVD-RW to see whether the media was at fault. The same happens.
I'm wondering whether this could be to do with my DVD drive - it's a Philips which people seem to think is the crappiest of the Xbox stock DVD drives, but there is no way to confirm or deny this suspicion, and I've not had any other problems with it not reading disks correctly before.
Is this a problem that anyone else has experienced?

After quite a few reboots I've found that the DVD drive works sometimes for half a minute to a minute or so, and then if I listen closely I can hear faint occasional 'gronk' sounds as it decides to stop reading the DVD.
So I've installed a few apps now, and this seems to be everything to do with crap hardware and nothing to do with the software at all.
My only consolation is that this xbox cost me £2.20 from ebay which seems good value to me, even with a crappy borked Philips DVD drive.
Anyone got a decent xbox-compatible DVD drive they don't want? ;P
I`ve got a few working drives, I`ll sort one out if you are after one.
You could also use Qwix or Craxtion to extract the contents of the AID iso and FTP the things you require to the xbox. _________________

Thanks user1, that's very kind. When I've sorted out my larger HDD I'll see how the drive copes with ripping genuine xbox games before binning it - it may be that it doesn't like my RW disks - I'll let you know how I get on.
Funnily enough I did a similar extracting thing to what you suggest using c-xboxtool which happily extracted the ISO and I then uploaded the bits I wanted to the xbox. Good call.
Cheers.
