I have recently started soft-modding xboxes as a hobby. I have modded several boxes and upgraded the hard drives using CHIMP on a couple, including 80 Gig, 120 Gig, and 160 Gig.

I was wondering how lrage a drive I can use with the 4.5 tools? Are ther special steps to take as they get larger?

A related question I have is what is the best IDE to SATA card to use for using SATA hard drives in the original XBOX? How reliable are they? Also which SATA drives are most likely to work?

ok i can answer the drive question on size. You can use any size, but the kernel may support up to a certain amount. There is a way ive heard that you can edit it and get a larger size but hey, like 600GB should be fine!
