I just one chip mod installed XBMC. All the buttons are there, but no labels? No "Programs" "Videos" "Pictures" "Music". Just green buttons and when I click on one, there are a lot of drives labeled SVN?

Help?

EDIT: It looks like the Default Project Mayhem skin is what's broken. I switched to a different skin through trial and error and everythings there....?

Further Edit: Other Skins cause the same problem. Or worse. One that has a purple tint to it crashes it out. And I cant change the settings before it crashes.

The box keeps overheating now too, at least it seems to be overheating. It just randomly shuts off down after 20min or so. Just pulled it apart and added new silver thermal goop to processor. Hope that helps. Not sure what is causing these issues...

Another Edit: Nope. The thermal goop didn't help. It still shut down, while in Aid 4.5 after 20 min or so. Then I can't turn it on with the power button. I have to hit the dvd drive button. That turns it on. But it only gets so far as the dashboard, then shuts back down.

Did you put the fan in backwards and can you post a pic of your solder work?

It's a solderless mod. I bought it premodded. The only other thing I did today besides update XBMC was swap out the dvd drive for another one, since the one I had was burnt out (wouldn't eject).

I didn't remove the fan...

I have checked all the connections, pins, etc. Nothing looks out of place, broken or out of the ordinary.

The X3 switches are set On On Off Off Off Off.

I am reinstalling XBMC now using Aid 4.5, but the last time I tried, it shut down halfway through.

Someone on the Xecuter site had the same problem with the power button and random shutdowns in August. I have added my own nightmare to his.

I am having a panic attack. Jebus.

Edit: Maybe it is a soldered mod - I don't know. It's X3, but I can't find the soldered part. The part that fits into the pins is fine. It also lights up blue when I press the eject button to power it up...

So after more research, it seems like similar problems happen to folks with bad P/E boards. Usually when they fry them during bad solder jobs. This shouldn't be the case as this xbox was modded almost 4 years ago and has worked flawlessly ever since.

Do these boards have a history of going bad? Are the other symptoms (random shutdowns, power button not working) a sign of something else?

Do you guys know if I can remove the board and make it work right?

Some times corrosion can build on the board and you get all kinds of weird stuff going on so its hard to say.

Been busy, haven't been able to get a pic of the mobo yet.

Has anyone else experienced the issues with the skn? I wish I would have gotten a picture of the screen, but the default skin had no titles next to the green buttons. Where the words Programs, Videos, Pictures, Music etc - nothing, nada, no links...

The last thing I want to do is mod another one if the installer is broken...

I realize I haven't updated this in a while, but I'm pretty sure the mobo is screwed up thanks to the chip. I am super busy and probably wont have time to try and fix it. It seems like the best bet for me is to try and copy everything off the hard drive. Any idea how I could copy everything from the xbox hard drive onto a windows machine?

How can I salvage the old 750gb hdd?

Thanks guys!

Just hook the drive to your PC and use 360 explorer to back up any files, when you have that then use the PC to format the 750 HDD and you should be good.

Ok, for the corrosion problem, I have done quite a few repairs on this, and it gets tricky as to find the spots, but take the whole board out, turn it over. Now there is four traces that run almost the entire length of the board under the controller ports. Take a look for any type of discolour or if you actually see broken spots in the trace paths. The reason I am saying this area is this is where most of the cool air flows under the board, so it pulls the damp air always past this area.
Now is this solderless or not, because in one point you said it is, then another point you say the problem is from bad soldering, or is it 50/50 like xenium chips where you have to solder the D0 point?
A picture is worth a lot if you like help right now, don't give up quite yet, most of us have had similar issues Smile

Oh ya, found this from another topic, check this out for a bit more info.

Holy f! its been more than a month, but I finally got to break it down last night. There are 3 wires soldered to the bottom of the board from the chip that plugs in on top. One of the wires clearly got caught in a screw hole. I am going to try and repair, then see if she fires up.

Wish me luck!

For those of you who are afraid to break open your box, dont be!!! Its really not that bad!
