Can someone point me in the right direction?
I would like to mod my xbox as follows, in order of importance:
1. Install XBMC
2. Install a bigger hard drive
3. Rip all my games to the hard drive
4. load emulators.
Would prefer a Softmod, if possible. Can someone point me in the right direction? thanks!!!

Welcome to the site man. Hope we can help.
Ok, you can do all ther things you want from the AID disc, or programs from the disc. However, you'll need to mod the Xbox first.
To perform a softmod you will need a copy of either Splinter Cell, Mech Assault or 007: AUF. You will also need a copy of the matching game save exploits, the SID and a memory card or USB drive/Action Replay.
So before we go into how to softmod, you will need all of things. Alternatively you can buy a chip and install it.
Hope that helps get you started. Let us know where you want to go from there and we'll do what we can to help.
Hey, thanks a lot for the prompt response, I have Splinter cell, and a memory card. I will work on geting the rest, reading up and getting back to you.

You will need a action replay to copy the gamesave to a memory or you could use another modded xbox to ftp the gamesave to a memory card.
Any one else got any new suggestions which i don't know about?

I do. I took a xbox controller and split it to have a Y connection with a Xbox end and MALE USB 2.0 (super easy, no soldering required) and took a memory card and installed XBCD Drivers, then I put in the memory card and installed the Action Replay drivers (google is the best thing in the world for these), and it detects it through the controller, and no $30 piece of hardware!
If you have questions about it, feel free to ask!

I assume you mean split the connector on a controller to a USB cable, then plug the USB cable into my PC. What are XBCD and action replay drivers? Are they needed?

Yes, that's what I meant, sorry for the vagueness, I was in a hurry.
And no, the XBCD drivers aren't 'required', but I think they are nice to have. You can skip those and download the AR software here:
http://rapidshare.com/files/65035066/USB_Softmodding.rar
It's in the rar file in a package someone put SID4 and USBview in it too. Just use the AR file...
Just install the software, then plug the memory card up and direct it to the following driver using the "Have Disk" option:
C:\Program Files\Datel\Action Replay XBOX\Drivers\xbreader.inf
After that, you can run the program and your memory card should be detected.
I may create a tutorial for this.

Don't worry, that's what we're here for, to help and be helped!
Oh, and fyi, if it ever refuses to install drivers right after you uninstall them, try restarting... XD I was stuck on that for 30 minutes... :/

okay, I already have a question.
I see I will need to add a larger hard drive. What is the correct order of steps?
Softmod using SID, then AID, then upgrade the drive?
Upgrade, then SID, then AID?
SID, the upgrade the drive, then AID?
Or some other order?

From me, who FYI am needing information on the upgrading HDD process using CHIMP, can tell you this:
When you softmod your xbox, the first thing you do is to backup the drives using SID, and Installing SID, because that IS the softmod. When your done installing SID you'll have a "hacked dash" which will be either Evox or UnleashX (UnleashX is better imo). From there, your system will actually be able to read AID, otherwise you can't read it. You should know that you don't necessarily have to "install" AID, but you can put it onto your hard drive so that you never have to use the disk again (unless a problem arises). You have to use AID to install CHIMP, which from what I've seen, the easiest and best method of HDD swapping. There is a tutorial here:
http://www.xbox-hq.com/html/xbox-tutorials-260.html
I plan on doing this myself, but I need some information on it before I try it, as you can see in my topic just 2 topics down from yours!
Now, if you can deal with not being able to backup Xbox games onto your HDD, then you really DON'T have to have a larger HDD, as you would be hard pressed to use all that space with roms and emulators (that you'd actually play). If you are really wanting to backup games and put movies/music on it, then I'd say you should upgrade.
Questions?

dude, thank you so much.
I built the usb cable and transferred the files from SID. I haven't modded the XBOX yet, but that looks easy.
My next steps, as I understand it.
1. Copy the files to the xbox
2. Follow the SID instructions to install the softmod
3. Used the AID disk to install the software I need
4. if I want to, use CHIMP to replace the HD with a larger one.
