I've had a modded xbox for about 2-3 years, but I didn't mod it myself, so technically, I'm still very much a noob when it comes to hardware issues.

I tried changing my softmodded xbox's hard drive for a bigger one using my chipped xbox following this tutorial from this very site.

I got to step 9 but now my chipped xbox won't boot. I don't see anything on my TV and the DVD drive is making a noise, like it skips or stops (there's nothing in the drive right now). Even if I put back my old hard drive in it does the same crap.

Thanks

So hold on, the Xbox is making that noise regardless as to which drive is in it?

Sounds like the DVD drive has gone wrong.

Well, it sure seams to me like it's the DVD drive doing the noise and not the hard drive. But it would be a pretty big coincidence that it died right while I'm trying to do this in between those particular steps. Just the fact that I see nothing on screen tells me that it can't be the DVD drive, there must something else wrong, something more important. I have an older xbox who's dvd drive was dying and I was able to softmod it using MechAssault before the drive died completely, yet it still boots fine and works great as a media center.

The machine won't boot of course if its not connected correctly. Its unlikely that you have two HDD's making the same noise and causing the same prob. Do you have backup's of your C and E drives, along with your eeprom?

I thought I did, but I can't find it on my PC so I'm gonna have to look for another solution.

Will the system really not boot if a tiny thing is wrong? Wouldn't it just give you an error code of some sort? It's not like it isn't connected properly, it's connected just fine, you just suggested the dvd drive might be dead, but it's still connected the way it's supposed to be. Would it make a difference if my hard drive was locked or not?

having it locked or not wouldnt solve ur problem. i think its a hdd problem or that ur gpu reached intensive temperatures and it completely melted. Mad i doubt the melting part.

Well, the tutorial makes me replace my chipped system's eeprom with the eeprom from the softmodded one. Would it have anyhting to do with that? I don't understand WHY I need to do this but...

Dead DVD or melted GPU are big coincidences if you ask me. As soon as I changed the eeprom and shut down then booted back up as the guide said to do, that's where I got this problem.

Having the power wire for the hard drive half way in will cause it to click and not power up....just an idea. Keep us posted.

One thing is for sure, loud noises are mechanical. Which would imply something physically wrong.

As yoshie said, double check everything, might be something simple.

Have you pinpointed exactly what is causing the noise yet. Disconnect the dvd rom and see of the noise goes away. Is there a disc inside the dvd rom? Take it out using the paper clip method if you can;t eject it normally.

A black screen with nothing appearing and no sound means it can't find the bios and would have northing to do with the eeprom as the bios process happens first then the eeprom unlocks the hdd. With it being chipped though the eeprom doesn' matter anyway not unless you've accidentally locked your old hd in config magic by mistake. What lights are there? Anything flashing?

What chip do you have and can it be flashed with a programmer? Is it soldered or screwed to the motherboard. Check all connections as well.

If you have checked all this then next step would be to take your hd's to the pc and use xboxhdm and see if any of them is locked. If not then use the xbrowser and check all the files are in the correct places.

If you don't have your eeprom then you'll need to buy a reader or make one yourself. Read it and make a xboxhdm boot up disc and unlock your hd if necessary.

Reflash the chip with a programmer if you can with your choice of bios - only if you know that there is no bios on it or it's corrupted.

With your unlcocked old hd connect it back up and see what happens. If you have the correct bios on your chip and you have the old unlcocked hd with the correct files on it and it doesn't boot then you'll have a hardware problem somewhere else (cross that bridge when you get to it!). Does this help ir confuse matters further?
