Posted: Tue Jun 24, 2008 3:16 pm Post subject: Softmod "reinstall" reboots to game/orange ring an
Hey there everybody. I managed to successfully softmod my xbox a while back using a hacked controller, SID 5.01 and Mechassault. Everthing was fine until my son deleted some files (nearly all of them). Now it only boots to retail mode (green ring). I tried the softmod again (I also tried using the Splinter Cell exploit) but it only just boots back to the game, this time with an orange ring (modded, right?). Thats it. I also tried to eject the disc just as the run linux was supposed to run and I can see a hacked dash(avalaunch,I think) for just a split second, then it just reboots. I used to have XP so loading the gamesaves and SID was easy. Now I have Vista x64 and its impossible to load anything to a controller (no memory card driver, typical eh?). I had to go to a friends house to load them this time. I do have the Splinter Cell and Mechassault exploits on the card (and harddrive). Would it cause some kind of conflict if I had both exploits on the memory card or hard drive at the same time? Im a bit of a noob here if you cant tell yet. From using the search, I found another post with a problem similar to mine but didnt seem to have a solution. Is it likely that Ill have to FTP my box or do some kind of hot swap?

First thing i got to know is can you still boot up a back up disk?

Do you mean AID? I tried but it just says "cant recognize disc" or whatever. Thats the only disc Ive tried. Is it a boot disc or something like Slayers? Please excuse, Im a bit of a noob.
EDIT: Ok, I know this is silly but...would any Linux builds help?

Yeah man, AID is the best boot disk out and it may not be reading because of the media you used.
Did you use a CD r, CDrw, DVD-r, DVD+r or DVDrw?
You would need to be able to FTP or boot to something to use Linux at all.
Hang in there bro, I'm sure with enough time and info we can get you going again as long as its not a motherboard problem.

I think I used a DVD-R but Im not sure as the disc is a printable one and has no indication of what it is. Would a CD-R be a better choice?

All xbox disk drives are different so your best bet is to try different types till you find what works for you (i use only DVD -r myself) and make sure to burn at the lowest speed with Nero, DVD decrypter or ISO magic.
If your xbox cant boot an original xbox game it most likely wont boot a back up disk, have you tried an original xbox game?

Yep, xbox games work fine. My backups cant be read. Its like there is a mod in there somewhere, when I tried the Mechassault exploit, it would just reboot when I chose to run linux and load the xbox game again, but with the orange ring. I tried ejecting the game when I chose run linux and it ejects the disc, shows the dash I originally had for a split second, and then reboots to retail mode.

Do you have a copy of your eeprom and have you tried the xbox live MS dash update then reinstall?
Check system info and see if you still have the right MS dash before you try the dash update.

I have the correct dash, would a reinstall of the ms dash help me reinstall SID 5? I dont have a copy of my eeprom. I forgot how I updated the dash, it was a while ago. I think I just coinnected to the internet but Im not sure. Can I put the update on a disc or a memory card? If Im correct, with the mod somewhere on the xbox, (or remnents of), wouldnt connecting my box kill it?

I accidently chose top connect to the internet (nothing actually connected to the internet) and it gave me the error 21. After reboot it was ok.

I'm not sure whats left to try since the MS dash is up to date using the MS dash update will do no good, did you use the virtual C install?
If you can risk it you could try completely removing all your save files and then reinstalling.

I tried that. I deleted everything on the card and on the HDD. I think I might have used the virtual c install but Im not certian. Would that be a help if I did?

Not really since you need to remove the VC to uninstall the soft mod.
With out the eeprom you might need to hot swap, chip or build an eeprom reader to fix this one.

Yea I thought I was going to have to hot swap or something. That would be the easist option of the three right? Ive seen the tutorials on how its done and I dont think its beyond me. Is it easiest to just install a regular HDD in my pc and do it that way or using FTP and a crossover cable to my xbox. Or that xbox HDD ribbon to PC method.

HDD ribbon to PC method since you don't have the eeprom and the HDD in your PC way only works with the eeprom on the Linux disk.
Cant say i have seen an FTP method of doing it.
