It might not fix it but I would just solder the wire together because in the end your going to want to do it anyways. _________________

it's not ur controller ports, cuase i have a stocked xbox and i took out ports 3 & 4, and played halo on it just now, with noi problems, except for the game freezing cause of my damage hdd, from hotswapping, it has to be ur ide cable , what's the exact error code, error code 7 does with the hdd.

Just swap the controller ports around(3and4 moved to 1and2) and leave the damaged one which is now 3and4 unplugged and see how it goes. With it being usb, if the port is shorting out, it might be giving an interupt problem. This happens on home pcs when the usb shorts out and the system wont boot. The same chip is used to run the controller ports as well as the hd/dvd rom. Why is the wire broken? This might be a small detail in a bigger problem.
