I have a whole stack of old xbox hard drives that dont have matching motherboards. I want to use them in some older pentium systems that I have to play some older 1st person shooter lan games such as duke nukem 3d and doom. Does anyone know how to take the fatx file system off them? I've tried with linux winxp and they will not read at all. Thanks in advance!!

It's funny that you mention that I myself have wondered about using the old drives in some external application. You know to put them in a enclosure to save some program that I might want to use in the future. It would be awesome if the brains here at hq could figure some way to reformat the old drives so they could be used by a pc.

If you can unlock the hdd you can slap it in your pc and format it and thay work fine in a pc.
Got 1 in my old dell for holding small files and info such as text doc with all my passwords and such.
Dont try hacking i keep it unpluged unless i need it.

If you want a nice empty hdd you can try this.
1. Connect the hard drive as primary master (remove the jumper)
2. Create a bootable floppy with ATAPWD.EXE on it.
3. Boot from the floppy and launch ATAPWD.EXE select the WD80EB drive and press enter.
4. Select ERASE PREPARE and then ERASE UNIT.
5. Enter the master password: WDCWDCWDCWDCWDCWDCWDCWDCWDCWDCWD
6. It will give you a Busy error, that means it is erasing the drive so please dont turn off the computer.
7. After 30min press F5 to refresh the list and you will see that the drive has become unlocked

Actually is a whole box (about 25) of hard drives, all with no matching motherboards. So, if I kill one trying, I'm not gonna lose any sleep
