I know I'm gonna sound old after this post but..... Am I the only one out there who dosnt care about graphics? It seems like nowadays its all people care about. A new game usually costs about 60 bucks. To me its getting to the point where its just not worth it anymore. That $60 will get you some pretty impressive graphics, but what happened to the gameplay? My first system was an 8bit NES that I got when I was about 5-6 years old. Back then the graphics were primitve, you only had a d-pad and 2 buttons, and that square controller really did a number on your hands. But the games were fun. I can go on and on listing games but Ill use mario as an example. A simple side scrolling platform game thats basicly the same thing over and over. I played Mario and Mario 3 (didnt like 2) for basicly 10 years. I mastered every level, learned every secret, every boss... and it was still fun. How many games today can you say that? When 16 bit came alog, it was all the same concept. You got slightly better graphics, a better controller, but still the same great gameplay. Dont det me wrong though, there were some bad games back then. But there were deffinatly more good then bad. It seems to me that the only games that seem to get better as the years go by are sports/action tiitles.
Its a sad thing to have to say, but the golden age of gaming has come and gone. All the kids today want are better graphics. I dont blame them though. They dont honestly know what they're missing. Id bet good money that most kids today have never played/seen an 8 bit, or even a 16 bit console. I blame mainstream media and game developers for all this. They're the ones who tell us what we want. They're the ones who put out 100 crappy games and 3-4 good ones a year.
What can you do about this you ask? Take a stand! Refuse to waste your money on another crappy halo clone. If/When you have kids, dont buy em a new system. Instead, fire up an emulator or an original 8/16 bit console (If you have one in perfect working order I envy you sooooo much) and show em real games with real gameplay. If you do that, they will learn to appreciate what they have now and maybe we can prevent another generation of mindless drones that shell out $60 for a game that will keep them satisfied for a month. _________________

For this one, I'm going to have to say both yes and no.
Let me explain. Its all about perspective. Back when I was young, my favourite games were things like Streets of Rage, Sonic the Hedgehog, FFVII etc. By todays standards, not exactly packing in the graphics department. However, back when I owned those games, they were at the top of the graphical power you could get from your system. Therefore when I had those games, graphics were top. For us and people of our age, those games were our starting point, therefore graphics have built up from that point.
For todays youth, the graphical start point is so much higher, what with todays PC specs, plus the PS3 and Xbox 360. Therefore, to todays youth, games from our past look rubbish and dated.
This however should not sum up the whole game. You see, for me, there is a word that is just as important as graphics. Gameplay.
Here's an example. Lets take two games from the same group: FFVII and FFXII. Both games in a genre I love, both gripping and involving, both very unique whilst sharing similar traits. No doubting that FFXII looks graphically better than FVII, being almost 10 years newer. However, for me, the gameplay in FVVI is just better. So despite the fact the characters are blocky, the fight scenes aren't as intense or fluid, edges aren't smooth and FMV cutscenes don't have the same panach, it still is, for me, a better game. So, for me in this case, graphics are not an issue.
That being said, the graphical look of FFXIII is instantly whats drawing me in.
A lot to read and a lot to consider. But in summary, I think graphics should be a factor in decisions, but don't knock anything til you've tried it.
Yeah, I know exactly what your saying. I love playing my NES, SNES, Genesis emulators cuz current games don't satisfy me. There are far and few between that keep u playing in todays realm. Can't beat a good game of Contra, Castlevania, etc. _________________

I'm am totally with FinalCloud in this one (I'm a die hard FF fan I bought a Jap NES just so I could get the OG versions of em back in the day). I still love playin old school games but as FC said there are games today with amazing graphics that you'll wanna play over and over, my favorite bein FFXII, I've gone through it atleast 6 times and still haven't got the damn Zodiak Spear and I won't stop till I do get it. Mario will always be one of my favorite games to just pop in and play, yes I still have my NES and also a SNES Atari, Sega Genesis, and also a Colleco Vision, just because of its simple and quick gameplay. BTW FinalCloud have you beat Yiazmut in FFXII yet? That battle took soooo long. _________________

I have indeed my friend and you're right, it took ages. I mean we're talking Ruby Weapon (FFVII) and Omega Weapon (FFVIII) type of long, lol.
I still play my regular NES and 64 all of the time. Had to put a new 72-pin connector in the NES, but it works great. Lots of games from my childhood. I agree 100%. I could care less about graphics as long as the game itself keeps me interetsed. Best classic game ever made in my opinion would have to be Zelda for SNES. It's unbeatable gameplay wise.

LOL I just beat FFVI again last week and I'm workin on FFIII again now.
I have the guide for FFXII but my nephew got ahold of it and I'm missin a page that tells what treasure not to open so I've had to play it over and over tryin to get it. (I don't believe in loading a save to go back over and over to get something plus the games just to fun to care)
Good comparisons for the Yiazmut battle BTW. _________________

in reply - i can still play super mario world over and over
i can still play sonic 2/3 w/sonic and knuckles
i still regularly play sf2 turbo snes version as i believe its the purest most balanced of the whole series
i still haven't beaten zelda 2 on nes and have a save on my xbox which im working on
I love f-zero on the snes still can play
super smash tv - the iconist mad action shoot em up one of my faves ever and looks gorgous on psp snes emulator (i have all these games on cartridge as well!!!)
micro machines turbo tournment 2 - megadrive great game can still play.
current/last gen
Xbox - urban chaos great game only completed once bored of now
halo 2 - took a few goes but once i completed i hated it cos when ive played it before i didnt realise how close i was to the end!!!
pyscho naughts fun no replay factor
and the list could go on i totally 100% agree with bonagriipz the fun has gone out of single player games but in contrast with online being the major new thing to console gaming this expands the gameplay beyond even what any games one player mode can do, i think the reason my friends xbox 360 got a rrod was i was playing gears of war online constantly (sleeping after a 10 hour session at 7am) lol! which i think is why the 360 will ultimately win (or be second to wii) as more people come, i wish i had my 360 cos i know id be playing graw 2 shouting orders like i need covering fire! cos barking orders is great fun'!!!!!
in halo 2's defence i could really feel for a game right now so thats where im going bye!
