Ok I went on Craigslist and found an xbox for 30 bucks. My sammy is able to read CD's but not games. Its an older DVD drive and can see its on the way out. So I met this guy and handed him 30 bucks for an Xbox. He didn't have cords and didn't know if it worked still, but did when he used it and had the cords. So I go home plug it in and it runs fine....But guess what! The DVD drive is toast...lol.
It looks to be a 1.6V and looks really good inside, the HDD is seagate and the year it was made is 2005. The dvd drive is an LG (I am crying for that was the best drive ever for the xbox). The drive reads but skips and will not play track 4 of my CD cleaner.
So I contacted the seller and he is willing to meet me and give me the 30 bucks back, but I am thinking heck the xbox isn't to bad for 30 bucks.
So I ask you guys should I keep the Xbox for parts maybe softmod it for a spare...or take it back and get my money back?

You can pick up a used xbox here (working ) for 80 bucks, and a replacement drive for around 45 bucks.
So by my math if you keep the xbox at 30 and got a replacement drive for 45 you still saved 5 bucks over all.
I wold keep it.

Where can you get replacement drives for 45? Everything I have seen is 65 for a new sammy or 69 for a modded LG. Which I am almost thinking of asking for that...but thats 80 bucks torwards a 360 ..lol. I might just keep it and see if the DVD isn't off the tracks. and I can always just get a chip and export a new HDD to it as well. www.llama.com had some samsungs on sale for like 35-50 bucks or something. maybe check them out. What you should do with the lg drive is take it apart and clean the laser with a qtip and alcohol (not saturated, just a dab). You may be able to save some money and get it working. I've saved more then a few drives like that. _________________

m8 buy urself an LG8164 pc dvdrom and mod it to fit the xbox. I have one in my xbox and it reads anything, as long as you can solder you're golden
It has been a year from soldering and sold my gear. I might just get the one already modded to fit the xbox for 70.00. Then I started looking for chips and could find any of them either...was thinking a nice Xenium gold solderless(installed one and loved it) but they are all sold out. Yeah I already toke it apart and cleaned the crap out of it...no go. It will not play track 4..it skips it. I haven't tried my sammy yet and will look to take that apart and clean it next. I was thinking I could softmod this puppy...but then without the DVD drive I can't..Booo Two Xboxes and no working drives

Put your working drive in the broke xbox till you get it softmodded and then use the broke drives guts to make it think it has a disc drive.
Boom room for two hdds, down side you got to FTP in all your info.
Up side mad space and amedia center.

I'd definitely keep it bud. You can find DVD drives for super cheap.
How have you been man, I haven't talked to you in a while. I think you are the dude I met at Kings in Greensburg (your girlfried drove you cuz I think she was going to a shower). That was like a year ago man!
Sorry I haven't been around. Am friggin going crazy at work. Got promoted a few months back (finally got into Salaried Management) and just haven't had time to stop in and say hey!
If you are in the area, I have a non modded Samsung SD-616 just laying here. I can probably be pursuaded to part with it for next to nothing. The drive is mint!!
