hey what's up, i'm new here. i've never had a console before but my friend just gave me an xbox that supposedly has a broken hard drive thinking i could fix it. from what i understand so far i'm going to need a mod chip and another hard drive, but the next steps are a little hazy to me (i.e. what actually goes on the drive once i get it and whether or not i actually need to extract the hdd key). there's so many tutorials on the web, i have no idea which ones apply to me. if someone could just kinda point me in the right direction i'd really appreciate it.

Yeah, a mod chip and a new HD will definitely cure your blues. Not to mention since you are chipping your machine, it will open up a whole new world of opportunities that standard machines just don't offer.
There are so many chips out there, and to be honest I haven't been doing much chipping in the last year so my advice would be to look around and find the best price with the best options.
I have always been partial to Xenium and Xecuter brand chips, but there are some cheapmod alternatives out there too. Some of the less expensive chips are mighty good so don't just buy the chip cuz it's expensive. Also determine whether you want to solder the chip or purchase a solderless solution. I prefer soldering.
Once you decide what chip you want, a tutorial for that particular chip and your particular version of Xbox will be easy to find.
To simplify your need to do list, here you go:
- Determine what chip you want and buy it.
- Find a HD (unlocked). HD's are very inexpensive these days. A 200GB HD is inexpensively purchased anywhere, even Wal-Mart.
- Download Autoinstaller Deluxe! This will help you greatly once you have your machine chipped.
- Make sure you have understanding on how to create and use a bios disk. This is a must, as without the proper bios you won't be able to enjoy your chip.
- Get to work! Now that you have all your hardware, software, and tutorials there's nothing to stop you from getting your machine up and running and enjoying all the benefits a modded Xbox has to offer!

wow i can't believe it's that easy. i kept getting the impression that this would turn into a total disaster. so the mod chip tutorials will cover locking a brand new drive?
