Hey all, I had a couple hours to kill so instead of catching up on my website work or gaming, I decided to light up my controller ports.

Couple hours and two third degree burns later (damn soldering iron fell off tray and reflexes kicked in...ouch), I got a pretty nice result. There isn't much room to work in those little things.

Sorry bout the semi blurry picture, will put a better one up some other time..too tired to mess around with camera settings..

Hey Slamscaper...yours will look seriously cool with that Halo translucent case!!

Later all!

Very nice mate Smile

Forahobby did his aswell using an orange light, it looked real cool 1st hand, especially with the skin he has.

I wouldn't mind getting lights in mine also, I'd have to decide what to get though. I'm thinking maybe white, yelow, or maybe even purple. Keep in mind that my skin is a greenish / blackish type of skin. I'll have to put up a photo as soon as I can get a decent pic of it...

Post subject: Nice Controller Ports! Is there a "How To" somewhe

RealMcCloy,

Nice work! That's a great effect. Did it take you two hours your first time, or is that how long it takes once you are proficient at it?

Also, if I wanted to do that to mine, is there a detailed tutorial/walk-through that explains how to do it, or is it too difficult to explain in writing with pics?

Assuming I could learn how to do it, how much does it cost for parts, and where do you buy them?

Finally, did you buy a particular soldering gun and solder, or can a normal (read: cheap) soldering gun that came with a PC repair kit do the job?

Have fun Gaming and Modding! Smile

I have a few questions, too...

Does your method work with the clear controller ports? I need a visually aesthetic method, as everything will be in plain site. Do you have any clear premodded ports? It'll look sweet if I ever get the clear cover replacement from customps2.com!

Speaking of the clear cover, do you have any ideas for attaching the EL light kit to the cover? On the Halo Xbox, cellophane tape works good, as it is non-visible through the translucent cover, but for the clear cover it won't be good enough.

The way I do it you cannot see anything different. I actually open the metal casings and work within it instead of the wiring all on the outside. That would look terrible with a translucent case. I will post a before and after pic so you can see what I mean. And maybes some inbetweens...

It's not real expensive to do, just very very tedious. There isn't much room to work in there. If I have to give one good hint it would be this. The first time I tried a LED mod was in a S-Controller. I used 26 Guage wire. Turned out to be too fat. So, what I do now is I get old phone cords that connect the phone and wall jack and use the wiring inside there. It's nice and thin, but not as think as the 30AWG wire you use for the D0 points. It's a bugger to strip, so I just melt the tips so only the wire is exposed. Now, it isn't a single stranded wire, so what I do is tin it with solder so it doesn't frey when I try to work with it.

Also, use 3mm LEDS and get as bright as you can. The LED's I used were 8000mcd...radio shack maxes out at 600mcd although they do sell the 3mm size...just not bright enough ones.

Solder the resistor to the RED power point. You have to clip it pretty close to the resistor then when cool bend it down so the cap will fit back on the port casing. I use a small glue gun to glue the LED's on the sides of the port casing at a somewhat angle pointing inward. I then trim the LED legs. Always be consistent with where you put the positive leg. I didn't pay attention once and had to guess which one was positive and negative after I had already clipped the legs. So now, I always make sure I put the positive leg in the same place for each LED.

It was hard for me to take pics as I was doing it, even with my tripod as I set the timer I never got my hands in the right position and pics were blurry. I'll have my wife take shots of the one that I do tonight and will make a tutorial for those who think they want to give it a shot.

My advice is buy extra ones first! That way if you booger up your port you can install the spare. I found them at the xbox llama page for only $6.00 each!!! Just do a search on xbox and llama together, you'll get the right page.

I found someone selling the already lit controller ports for $39.00 each. At first I thought they were smoking their bathwater as you only have about 20.00 in parts for both! But after I did it I realized why. It is seriously tedious. I have done a few now and think I am pretty proficient at it and it still took me a few hours! The hard part is all the wiring. The wires are so short/small that you have to use needle nose pliers to hold while you try to solder them in place.

As far as attaching the EL wire to a clear cover, that is tricky because you have to run the EL wire under the casing. Then you can see it and it looks terrible. When I do El Wire installs, I remove the metal heat shield cuz drilling through it sucks. You almost need something like that so you can hide the EL wire that will be lined throughout the inside of your case. Either that or you will have to wrap electrical tape around any EL wire that is inside your case, which will hide the lighting of it, but during day may look nasty. Maybe some type of think white type of tape...dunno.

As far as what equipment I use, I used a 15Watt iron because I didn't want to melt the wires or create havoc within the port casing. I used a mini glue gun to glue the LED's in place as the last time I used a full sized and it was hard to get into the little spaces.

Hey DJB...yours would look great with UV LED's. I have 8000mcd UV LED's...if you are interested PM me...I owe you anyway. You and forahobby have always been good to me so I don't mind hooking you up. What are Co-Admins for anyway... Wink

I also still have to send you those roms anyway...I keep forgetting to resend!!! PM me your address again as I can't find it. If you want a different color other than UV let me know. I only have Green, Red, Blue, and UV right now, but am about to place an order. I get my LED's from 123leds.com at least for now. I also get them from xboxrepairguide.com but he was out last time I tried...he got effected by the hurricane since he is in Florida. I think he's stocked again.

Anyway, here's some pics. Again, sorry for lack of quality.

Before opening:

Opening Port:

Opening Port another pic:

After both metal case tops are off:

A quick look after LEDs are glued and resistors soldered. Wiring complete on the port toward the bottom of image.

Make sure you put tape over work so no shorts are to occur with metal casing:

Now the finshed product after casings put back on:

Whew...took me longer for this post than it did for the friggin work...HA.

Hope it helps you guys... If not...I'm for hire Wink

Peace ALL!

Duh! For some reason, I thought the LEDs were attached to the front panel of the Xbox! Anyone know where these can be purchased premodded? I saw a UK site... 35 quid! A little steep for my blood!

Hey Xboxter, What do you got?

hehehe..

Actually, I have seen them as hight as $39.00 per side!!! When I freaked out and figured there's no way it's worth that I decided to do my own.

It is just time consuming as hell. I can chip a machine in half the time it takes me to do these things.

I'll PM you when I figure out something bud.

Hey DJB, since it's half hers...how about one side a manly color, and the other side a little more feminine...HA...

Just let me know bud.

Hey DJB, here's those pics that I promised. This way when you get the ones I am sending, you'll be able to put them in no problems. And, if you want send me your ports you take out and I'll pop in different colors for you, or just keep them for spares. Up to you bud.

Here is a pic of the top of the controller port. There are two screws that I drew a crude circle around. No oval marquee tool harmed in the making of these circles...HA. As soon as you remove the DVD Drive and HD carriage you will see the controller ports.
It is a number 10 torx screw.

Here is a pic of how you wiggle it out. All you do is pull from the backside in an upward motion and it will come out. It seems real tight at first, but once it comes out it's pretty easy.

And finally of course you can't forget to unplug it from the mobo!

And there you have it, all you do now is shove in the new ones and plug it in to the mobo. Should only take about five minutes to do both!

Hope the other half likes the color I'm sending!

Giood work yet again Realmccloy.

What we are trying to do now is put most of the good tutorials and/or guides in PDF format, and make it available for download (would be great for users that would like to print out instructions and have them sitting by them). We've started doing a few lately, but I really thnk this would be a good one to add. There's no rush mate, just do it when you can be bothered.

About the other half liking the colour choice, she does actually (and I did tell her all the possiblities), it will go well for an upcoming plan we have for the Xbox.

* Strip the old green skin off
* Put on a Blue skin
* Put in Controller Lights
* Put a Blue Jewel LED in the top...

Even though I love my green skin from designerskins.com I think it's time I revamped it, and since the UV lights will be the start of a new project (so to speak) we might as well go all out, hehehe.

Either way with the green or blue skin, the UV lights are gonna look awsome!!

She also asked me to pass on her thanks to you aswell Very Happy

Catchya mate Smile

Hey DJB, got your PM and email..I replied to your email.

I think you misunderstood me...I'm not just sending the lights and ports separte..I am doing the mod for you. I will solder the resistors and wiring and glue in the LED's (UV colored). All you will have to do is swap out with yours bud!! You will have them changed in five to ten minutes tops!!

No soldering, just unplug your controller ports and plug mine in Very Happy

It will take me a few hours to do them, but I will have them done this weeked. I will make sure to test them in one of my spare used machines that I have laying around. Then I will send them out to you with those mameOX roms. I have them on two DVD-R's for you..over 6GB worth.

later bud
