yes, you do need a softmod to play games off the harddrive. its reasonably easy too. and you can upgrade your harddrive, so you can have alot of games on there at one time..

what you mean it flashes up ? did you do the proper steps in backing up the C? if you did then it can be simple as going to the mod menu hitting uninstall and your xbox is back to normal.
theirs alot of advantages to softmodding such as upgrade hard drives so you can fit more stuff new latest softmods can be compared in some way to a modchip on average stuff one of the softmod such as sid 4 lets you have a fully softmoded xbox while being able to play xbox live without being banned, you can save your money back backing up your games to your hard drive keep the originals safe for resale purposes and cut loading time easily by half , you can also play classic games such as nes snes sega n64 ps1 and many many more note : some ps1 games will almost stop the xbox due to the power requirements same goes with n64 and no ps2 games are not playable .

when you setup your softmod did you say boot to power or eject... and you can only backup your OWN games, and dont sell them. thats illegal and we don't support that here.. but the major thing is when you wee setting up your softmod... if you said to boot to power or eject.. try hitting eject to boot it up..

I personally would try reinstalling the softmod as it seems it didn't go properly, also get sid 4.5 its a bit better then 3, as with all download aid 3.1 it has everything u need- then get the splinter cell files over again load up splinter cell, back up eeprom, ms dash and mod, then install softmod takes around 20-30 minutes the shadow.img file takes a while to copy over be patienct! pick unleash as ur dash for now, youll have to reboot to complete, take out splintercell, press a when it comes up "to complete softmod" yadada should complete and your greated with the unleash blue skin, pop in yout aid 3.1 disk (follow manuel to create) format c:\ instal ms dash 90210 or woteva its called preper e:\ drive, install apps, emulators etc and you should be good to go, oh i always put xbox media centre as my main dash its well useful! hope this helps!
