I know Xbox DVD drives aren't exactly the best around (ie: they don't read everything, etc.), so I was thinking of adding a second drive to read my burned media that doesn't work in the original XBox drive. Btw, I haven't actually played around with XBMC yet ... more in the planning stages right now.
I can get my hands on an external DVD drive (USB connection), however, it sounds like it would be a lot of coding work to have XBMC actually recognize the drive if it were plugged directly into the XBox (although that would be a really cool feature). So I was thinking of setting up an old laptop running some sort of NAS software and connecting the USB drive to the laptop. Before I go to the trouble of trying this out ... does XBMC support such an arragement? Can I play normal DVDs via NAS without adding a lot of extra steps (ie: having to browse thru folders to reach the NAS, etc.)? What about encrypted DVDs (ie: store bought vs. burned).
Is there a better solution (that looks decent when finished ... ie: open Xbox with cables hanging out doesn't exactly fit in with the living room decor ).
All suggestions and comments are welcome,

You can tweak the thompson and phillips dvd drives to read media alot more better. You cannot really just adapt any dvd drive to read xbox disks either.
So drive tweaking is the best option _________________

If the laptop is in the near vicinity of the xbox, you can setup a home network (via the windows network wizard) then once that's done, right click on the USB drive that's hooked up, go to properties, and click on "Sharing" enable that, and you will be good to go via the "Workgroup (SMB) Share" option under "videos" or whatever kind of media you're looking for. However, with this method, when watching a dvd, you'll need to navigate to the first .IFO file in order to get the full menu and movie playback effect. _________________ "That which does not kill you, only makes you stronger."
