Since the XBox DVD drive is an IDE drive, is it possible to use any PC DVD drive in the XBox instead of the original? If yes, what is the extra cable for? I've done a little bit of reading and it sounds like it's something to do with the eject status? Is it basically there just to let the XBox know when the drive is open and closed? Or is there more to that extra cable?
Thanks,
Harry
P.S. Please move this thread if it belongs somewhere else, but I looked thru all the forums and couldn't find one that fits this question. Thanks again.
P.P.S. I should probably add ... I will be using this mainly for XBMC, not really for playing XBox games.

Unfortunately, it is not possible to use bog standard PC DVD drives in the xbox.
There is a ever so slight difference in the casing that prevents ordinary DVD drives from fitting. Also, remember that your PC's DVD drive will not read Xbox games.
The IDE connection is about all they have in common. _________________

What if the PC DVD drive is housed outside the XBox? I'd have to run the IDE cable and power cable thru some sort of opening ... but I'm still concerned about that extra cable connection ... what does it do?
Thanks,
Harry
P.S. Would a PC DVD drive read backed up games?

the extra loom that connects to the mobo handles power and also eject button features (in case you hadnt noticed theres no eject button for the DVD like a normal PC drive )
as is said the LG8164 mod is IMHO a great way to go. and yes, with the right firmware flashed (very easy to do) will read backed up games

I think I've seen this before, but I can't remember where. Can you please put up the link just for reference?

If you don't feel like doing the conversion on the drive yourself Divineo stocks them already modded and ready to install.
Here is the direct link.

Just remember it will only work on a chipped Xbox.

I know, but if you buy the drive and the adapter separately you have to do the flash and assembly yourself. That will only save you about $20.
If I didn't know how to do it, I think the extra $20 would be worth letting someone else do it.
