Posted: Mon Oct 30, 2006 11:05 pm Post subject: Problems launching games after mod
I did a search for this but didn't find anything. Anyway, I installed a Xenium Gold chip in my Xbox and have the original Xbox BIOS & EvoX M8+ Bioses loaded. I also upgraded the stock hard drive to a 160gig Western Digital.
I have noticed that for whatever reason, I'm not able to load some games. Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory and NCAA Football 07 won't start at all, whether booted using the original Xbox BIOS or EvoX. When trying with the original Xbox BIOS, the games simply lock up at the very first Xbox screen. Tiger Woods 07 gets past this, but locks up after the checking for Saved Data parts.
I've tried ripping the games to the hard drive. It rips successfully, but the results are the same.
Now, with my ORIGINAL hard drive, which I have modded, the games work without a hitch.
Ideas? Is it common for certain newer games to check for the size of the hard drive and when it's nonstandard, to not work?
Please let me know if I can be more clear about something.
Also, some games DO work. Halo 2 appears to have no problems, nor does Fable or Prince of Persia.

I will try that and let you know what I find.
As a side note, I reformatted my larger hard drive and set it up from scratch, rather than using Xenium's OS tool to copy the contents of the original Xbox hard drive to the new one. Doing this gave me the ability to actually boot these games.
Of course, if I decide to stay with this install, I will ultimately lose my 3+ years worth of saved games. :-\
I've got two other hard drives I can test out clearing the cache with. Those hard drive images should be identical, and I get the same boot problem with both of them. I'll clear out the cache folder and get back.
Would it be worth trying to use Chimp to clone my original hard drive as opposed to the Xenium OS's?

Clearing out the cache seems to work. I had a direct copy of my stock Xbox drive on a 40 gig HD, and after clearing the cache, presto. I was able to play the games.
So now I will repeat the process, except I'll beef up to the 160 gig that I got to work after doing a manual install. I'm happy that I shouldn't lose all those saved games.
Now tell me, what did clearing out that cache folder actually get rid of? Why would deleting the items in there fix the problem?
\\EDIT: By the way, thank you very much for the help. This was the only problem I really ran into with this mod, but it was a frustrating one.

well the modding process uses the cache, but dosent clear it automatically. You just got rid of temp files thats all. _________________

Well I realize that I got rid of temporary files.
But why would getting rid of those magically allow me to play some games that weren't previously working? NCAA 07, Tiger Woods 07, Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory--all caused problems. When I tried Fable, Halo 2, and Prince of Persia, however, they worked great.
If your answer is "I don't know why it worked, but it did," I'll be fine. I'm just curious is all.

Its probably because the other games use the same named temp files _________________

well after clearing ur cache folders u will be able to play those games that u couldnt play. the games u could play probabally used a small cache space but those more complex games like splinter cell and all that crap use large cache space....or so i presume. so after clearing ur cache u should be able to play those games. _________________

robzzombie, if the cache was full the xbox would lock up and do nothing, if it had the same temp cache folders the program will fail to execute and go back to the dash as the cache does not automatically delete itsself in E/cache just the x,y,z caches when powered down. _________________
