Hi all. Trying to upgrade to bigger HDD. Its an 80GB maxtor on a 1.3 system.

Installed AID 3.04 on OEM HDD and thought would be straightforward to replace HDD once unlocked with configmagic. Wrong!

When i try to put the bigger HDD in i get an error 6. And does same if i put OEM back in and lock it.

(O yeah should point out bigger HDD isn't new. Its 1 that i had in another system which died.)

Cant think what could be but could a possiblity be the hacked desktop i installed? Evox 1 click.

6 means its locked with the wrong eeprom. If the larger HDD is from another system, do you have the eeprom file for that xbox? if you do you unlock it, drop it in(chipped, if I remeber correctly), and lock with that xbox.

Your hooped?

You really only have the option of having the drive RMAd by the manufacturer, or paying a online service to unlock the drive.

Do you have the mobo that locked drive?

Thanx for the info Greven but to be honest looks a little to longwinded for my liking.

I'd rather just buy a new HDD Wink

Can the HDD not be formated and used in my PC. Seems a waste of an 80Giger?

No! Sorry Manik, but did you even read the beginning post? If the drive is locked you will not be able to use it unless you can unlock it first.

Contact the manufacturer, they may replace it for free/minimal fee.

Ok I'm no expert here, but are you sure there's nothing i can do to fix this? Just seems to me there should be even if there aint.

Took out the maxtor 80GB locked HDD last night and put back in the OEM. After some messing about i managed to get FTP access and copied the backup folder to my PC's HDD. Inside the folder are 4 bin files and a txt doc.

1.bios.bin 2.disk.bin 3.eeprom.bin 4.hddkey.bin

And the hddinfo.txt doc has the following info.

Disk serial num
Disk model num
HDD KEY
HDDLockDisablePasswrd
XboxHDDKey

They all have various numbers and letters combo's which there's no point in listing but i presume if i could transfer the info to the 80GB HDD I'd be in business.

Hope dont take this wrong way Greven as not saying your wrong, but doesnt it seem a little odd that with all this info and all the tools on the AID disk at my disposal i cant unlock the 80GB maxtor?

Thanx for the help so far boys. Appreciated Wink

We may need some clarification here on how/why/what happens when a harddrive is locked.

Some harddrives are enabled with the ability to lock. This is something done in the firmware of the harddrive, and is completely independant of the computer(or xbox) that its connected to. When it's locked, it is only able to be unlocked with a password.

In the case of the xbox, the password is the important part of how MS hoped to implement their security. There is a chip on the xbox motherboard called a eeprom chip. This stores 256 bytes of information, including things like serial number, DVD region, etc. It also has a number in it that is unique to each eeprom(an therefore to each xbox). The hard drive also has a unique identification created from the manufacturer.

So, when the xbox is manufactured microsoft knows the unique ID of the HDD and the unique ID of the eeprom. It uses a math formula to calculate a third unique number, based off of the HDD code and the eeprom code. This is the password used to lock the harddrive.

Then the xbox is turned on, it reads the eeprom chip for the unique ID within, and requests the unique ID from the hard drive. It then calculates the password the same as when in the MS factory and attempts to unlock(temporarily) the hard drive. If it is not locked, you get an error 5. If its not the right password you get error 6.

So, if you do not have the eeprom information that was used to calculate the locking password for the HDD, your hooped. If you DO have the eeprom chip or the eeprom.bin file(a dump of the contents of the eeprom chip) then you can use xboxhdm to unlock the drive. If not, you will have to try to bruteforce the password, which is what I beleive the online service does.

Does this help?

You cannot simply copy these files to the 80gig ( it would have to be unlocked first) . As Greven has explained these numbers are generated and stored by the systme it was locked in, what you have are backups that are unusable for the 80gig. The company tha does the online unlock gave away a free version of it's software a while back and I might still have it.

.....

Nevermind found it. Supposedly this will unlock without killing your data, but I don't know for sure. It has a force mode and I think that one might.
