Alright like the title says, what does it mean when people say a harddrive is lockable or unlockable and what kind do you want when you are looking for a hdd to put in your box?

Some hard drives have the ability to lock, which means that no data from the drive can be accessed with out the password that that it was locked with. Xbox retail drives are locked from teh factory, and MSdash will not boot unless the drive is locked and it can unlock it.
If you want to check if a drive is lockable, check the "drive" section of this website _________________
What it means its either a harddrive can be locked for the xbox or cant be locked for the xbox, for example if your xbox is softmodded and you want to upgrade the harddrive you have to get a harddrive that will lock in your xbox so you can use it.
For a modchiped xbox, you can use any harddrive lockable or not.
ok well i was looking at this harddrive herehttp://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16822144701 but its not on the compatibilty list. Does that mean if i were to buy this hdd i would basically be hoping that its lockable and if its not im screwed? My xbox is softmodded btw.

ATA disk locking is not just confined to the xbox. A lot of laptops have this security feature too. its becoming more widely used.
