Hello all,
Of course I am new to this. I have an Xbox version 1.0 and have installed a new X-Chip with the solderless connector. I can connect to the X-Chip through the USB connection and have loaded the m8.bios into banks 2-3. When I boot up the xbox, I get the X-Chip menu with the Cromwell Bios V1.0 menu and listed are Continue Cromwell, EvoX m8, the rest of the banks and Flash System Bios.
I have no idea what's next. I have burned the HQ autoinstaller to both DVD-R and CDRW, but nothing reads and I get no indication of EvoX being able to load when I choose it from the Menu.
I am also trying to swap out the hard drive, so I get an error 16 when I let it boot to MS Dashboard through the eject button.

I wish I knew what I am doing. Can someone help?

Thanks

Hey there fellow noob!! Don't worry bud, we are all newbies when it boils down to it. There is always something to learn in this arena. Let's see if we can get you going in the right direction.

Firstly, I would take some time and look over some of the tutorials we have. Ones like Evolution X for Dummies, Glossary of Terms for Newbies, and some of the other great pieces of info for us first timers.

Now, with that said let me give you a little modding 101 action so you can get a better understanding of what you are doing.

You have actually gotten a lot of the hard things out of the way. You have your modchip installed and it excepted your bios flash. I am sorta wondering why you chose the m8 bios with a 1.0 xbox. If you end up with a few bugs, just flash the Xecuter2 4983.67 bios. I have heard some people having issues with IGR (in game reset) and a few other little odds and ends. Nothing earth shattering, but still it wasn't up to snuff. BTW, In game reset is what allows you to automatically reset your xbox when you are playing a game so you can launch another one. Otherwise, you would have to shut your machine off, turn it on again and boot up to play another game off your HD.

Your hacked bios will now allow you to run unassigned code on your xbox. When you play a normal xbox, or a modded xbox that has the mod chip disabled the bios only allows you to run code that MS has assigned to it. That's probably the easiest way I can explain it.

Your next steps are going to be to format your HD if you haven't already. You can do that with the autoinstaller. If your DVD drive is recognizing the media that you are using, which it should recognize the DVDR here is how you get it going.

Turn on your xbox and get to your OS (Operating System) Menu. Put the autoinstaller in and the select the M8 bios and let it boot. If all goes well you should get the "Xbox HQ Autoinstaller" Main Menu Screen.
If it doesn't recognize your DVD R then you may want to try the bios that I formentioned. I know that sounds crazy, but trust me. I just ran into an issue like that and the bios helped. I was raised on the premise that the only the DVD Drive and how you prepare your media determine if your disks work or not. But, now I know that isn't always the case, but still is a good rule of thumb.

If you can't get to the main menu, stop and post. Give us your entire scenerio and we will go to work for you.

Once you are at the autoinstaller main menu the first thing you want to do is format your HD. Is this a new HD? Or, are you using the original HD (retail drive) that came with the machine. You will have to select the appropriate option according to your answer to that question.

Once your HDD is partitioned you will now install EvoX (Evolution X). Evolution X is going to be your default dashboard and gets installed on the C drive. Choose the 3935 Build as it is newer and badder ass...is that actually a word??? Anyway...

After you have your dash installed then go ahead and install XBMC and your apps. If you have a new larger HD then install the apps on F. If you don't have a larger HD then you will obviously have to install on what's available.

The apps you will be installing are but not limited to;

XMBC (Xbox Media Center)
PxHDD Loader (game backup to HD tool)
DVD2Xbox (game or DVD Backup tool)
Avalaunch (Alternate Dashboard)
MXM (Media X Menu, also an alternative dashboard)
Complex Tools
FTP Client (cant rememer name)
and a few other applications.

After your apps are installed the next thing you want to do is go to EEprom / HD management. Here you will lock your HD. Just select Lock HD and it will take care of itself.

The reason you have to lock your HD is because the MS Dashboard will not launch unless HD locked. You will get an error and also not be able to jump on xbox live.

Once this is all done, eject disk and reboot machine.

Now, when you get to your OS and choose Bios M8 instead of getting an error it will direct you to Evolution X Dashboard. From there you will have menu options to launch applications, change skin, yada yada yada.

You will want to immediately choose Launch MS Dashboard. From there you will set your date and time. After that is done, either use the IGR (Press and Hold Left Trigger + Right Trigger + Black Button + Back Button all at the same time) or just turn off manually and turn back on.

Now you will want to configure your network settings if you plan on being able to FTP into your machine. At the EvoX menu choose Settings and then scroll down to IP Address. Press the A button and then go ahead and configure your IP address to what it should be. Then click done. You will still be in settings menu. Now you can choose whether you want Celcius or Farenheit to show on the processor and HD temp readings, how the date looks. yada yada. Once done with the settings, scroll the whole way down and choose Save and Exit.

Reboot your xbox with your modchip disabled to see if you can automatically go to the MS Dash and load the MS Bios with no errors.

If you get errors, stop and post what errors you are getting. If no errors, turn off and boot with M8 bios (also called hacked bios) and start learning about your apps, back up a few games, learn how to install emulators, how to FTP roms over to your xbox HD. Stuff like that.

Well, there you have it. Today's crash course. This is actually stuff you probably should have known about prior to chipping your machine. It would have made things a little easier for you if you would have known what to do from step a to z. I understand though a lot of people don't realize how much you have to do. Most people think as soon as your chip is in, it's ready to roll. I know until I read up on some things that's what I thought.

Anyway, good luck and let me know if we can help in any other ways.

later bud.

definitaly use the xecuter2 4983.67 bios instead of the m8 if u havent already cause with the m8, IGR doesnt work and doesnt support over 137 gig hdd, at least with the xbox v1.0 and if u have any other questions about your x-chip i can really help u cause i have the exact xbox version and chip u are running and i had a lot of bugs to ironed out but it sounds like u got most of it figured out now. but if you still have that bios boot screen and u want to bypass that all together go back to your x-control usb programmer and setup the bios u want to use and program it to boot that bios instead of the default xbox bios and i never use eject to power xbox cause of that error screen but u probably could also put the bios on the chip twice one for boot and one for eject i havent tried that yet but it would probably work to.

Hey Kantraban, I didn't want to use your name, but I knew you were having issues.

It's always nice having someone speak from experience... Smile

Later man, thanks for ringing in and helping out with this one.
