My kiddo has a factory stock v1.0 xbox that will only boot to the error screen 'call for service' with an error code of 16, LED flashing red/green. From what reading I have done its something like a clock error with the HD boot sequence or something. Obviously something is corrupt.
I've read a bunch about chipping/modding etc. I am basically looking for the easiest way to get the xbox working again for the kiddo to play games. While the chipping/modding may really interest me, all she cares about is getting it up and running like factory.
So that being said, what would the most cost effective and efficeint way be to fix this xbox?? Feel free to comment I'd appreciate the help. Thanks for looking!!

i would say the cheapest/fastest way would be to hotswap the hd to return to factory conditions...
then if that doesnt work out then the cheapest mod chip is a duo x2 or someting like that...
i really cant help much to chips as i know other member have better expericene.... they i'll be here

Thanks for the reply!
I attempted to do the hot swap. All went well enough but when I attempt to build an xbox HD from scratch it gives me a message saying that the HD is unlocked but there is no partition table found and that I should not reboot with out building one. But it doesn't give me the option to build one just to abort the operation. Any ideas about this guys?? TIA

the only option it gives me is "press any key to abort" No other options are present.
I grabbed the MSDash from pirrup and put the ms-c files in the C folder on xboxhd disk. They are there. Just need to know how to access them.....thanks again!

This is what the screen says specifically after I choose option #1 to build an xbox HD from scratch.
Building an Xbox HD from scratch is a two step procedure.
First the partition table is built.
Then partitions are formatted.
We will now search /dev/hda for an xbox partition table.
No xbox partition table found on /dev/hda
Drive is not locked but locking is enabled.
Don't reboot until you have built a working xbox HD since rebooting will re-lock the drive.
Press any key to abort the operation.....
HTH to figure this out. Thanks again!

i've had that problem before....its because your HDD is still locked...wat excatly are u doing when u hotswap?....hotswaping requires good timing....i was able to unlock mine after 5 or 6 trys...anyways heres a short tut on wat i did to unlock my HDD
1. turn on your computer and make sure all your computer HDDs are unpluged and have no power and have your IDE cable out so it can reach your xbox. make sure your xbhdm disc is in your computer cd\dvd drive.
2. press the "Pause\Break" button on our keyboard right before the comp bios trys to load any drives u may have.
3. make sure the xbox case is off and turn on your xbox....as soon as the "Microsoft" logo appears at the bottom of your screen pull out the IDE cable on your xbox hdd and plug it to your computer IDE (this should freeze the xbox)
4. press "spacebar" on your computer and u should be good to go. oh and just in case u didn't know....u have to spell out "yes" when answering the questions in the program...don't just type "y"
note: make sure u have all ur computer HDD unpluged or u'll end up with more than one HDD for your xbox... making your computer HDD useless to your computer...hehe i would know...LoL

I am doing everything the tut says as well as what you stated with the exception of one thing. I don't get a MS logo when the xbox boots. It goes from the green X to the error screen.
xboxhd states that the drive is there and unlocked as in my previous post. Where I am at right now is if I try to turn the xbox off to retry (if xboxhd is correct) I will be trying to have the xbox communicate with a blank drive. Don't know what that will do for me.
If I can't get this figured out a chip is looking better and better....hehe
Thanks again!

When its booting the linux front end, you should see a series of boot log strings. When it gets to the HDD, you should NOT see a whole lot scrlling text about sectors(can't remember the exact string). If you see this then the drive is reporting its unlocked but it actually is locked.
If thats not happening here is what I would try:
Redownload and burn a new copy of your xboxhdm disk just to be sure.
Completely disconnect and reconnect all appropriate cables to be sure
Confirm the manufacture and model number that xboxhd reports.
Instead of using 1 to build new drive, try using the seperate options by building a partition table and then restoring C. _________________

ms-c file was unrar'd and transferred to the xboxhd C folder.
I have not disconnected power yet from last night . I will try to reboot and use option 2 to rebuild C. Will let you guys know how it goes.
The whole linux boot and pre build from scratch goes very well. Nothing excess about the HD.
Will update soon.....
Thanks alot guys!

OK guys....
I have just finished working on this problem for the night. I rebooted and went through the hotswap tut. Seemed to work OK. Everything just the way the tut says it should happen. STILL get error 16 on xbox start up. I have noticed one thing though....before on start up the xbox would go from the green X to the error. Now it actually does have the MS logo under the green X before it gives the error. Little progress....hehe.
Don't know what to say. I reburned the xboxhd disk and whatnot. The C folder on the xboxhd disk contains the folowing file/folders:
If no other ideas what solderless chip would you recommend?? Something simple that would get the kiddo playing games again and possibly burnt ones to boot.....
Thanks for you time guys!!

I LOVE my xecuter 3 with Xapter, works wonderfully _________________
I had, well still have the same problem that you are discussing, same progress too, still no result, i am actually sending it to someone to fix, because i can not seem to do it, most likely you will have to use a mod-chip, because i tried like a bazillion times on the xboxhdm thing, with no results, but it did work once, but then still went to error code 16. i wish the best of luck to you, because i feal your pain.
