edit: for some reason my title got truncated. It's supposed to read: What is the "right" or "proper" way to exit out of A.I.D. - thanks.

Hi guys, another n00b here. I softmodded my Xbox about a week ago, and installed a 250GB hard drive. So far, everything is working great. I loaded some of my games on the hd, and used A.I.D. 3 to install a couple apps and emulators.

I put A.I.D. in again earlier this week, and I must have fouled something up, chose a wrong option somewhere, because I screwed up my box and got an error 13 (missing dash).

I was able to use my xboxhdm disc, choosing the option to "restore C: drive", to get my box back - had to reapply the softmod, but that's no big deal. Side note: what is the difference between "hot swapping" and just using your xboxhdm disc to unlock and re-format the hd a second time?

So, anyway, I've got my softmodded box up and running, everything's cool - but I'm just concerned about what is the "right" or "proper" way to exit the A.I.D. 3 disc so that I'm sure I don't overrite my dash or something?

Say I boot A.I.D. 3, choose to install a couple things, and then I'm done. If I just power off and then back on, well the disc is still in there and I'm back in A.I.D. 3. What I've been doing is pressing the eject button while I'm on the A.I.D. menu (pressing eject causes my box to reset) then I quickly take out the disc and close the tray, so that I boot into my UnleashX dash. I set SID 4.5 to boot the softmod menu when powering on with tray open - I guess that I'm closing the tray fast enough after taking out the A.I.D. disc that the box thinks it's booting with the tray closed?

So, yeah, just a stupid n00b question, but I figure you guys can set me straight - Thanks! Very Happy

You can also go to the bottom of the list and use the Reboot or Shutdown Xbox options.

BTW, when you 'HotSwap' you have the Xbox open and running, and the computer open and running (in a paused state). Then you take the IDE cable off of the Xbox HDD and then plug in the IDE cable from the Computer into the Xbox HDD, and then un-pause the PC and let it detect the HDD.

Thanks guys, if I can do the in-game-reset, that'll be just what I'm looking for.

I'm getting off my own topic here, but let me ask more about hot-swapping. I understand now from what LEE337 said, that it's a procedure that involves booting up the Xbox with the hard drive, and then while the Xbox is still powered on, switching the hd over to a PC's IDE cable to work with it from the PC.

My question is: What is the situation on your Xbox that requires you to do a hot swap? I'm curious because I hear stories of people having to do it - but I was able to fix my Error 13 without having to hotswap - I did have to take the drive out of the Xbox, put it into a PC and use xboxhdm - but even though that's a pain in the butt, it's much easier than hotswapping!

To rephrase, what problems require a hotswap to fix, instead of just using a PC and xboxhdm without hotswapping?

Thanks, the peeps on this site are awesome! I need to go buy a t-shirt or something to show my appreciation Laughing

The reason people need to hotswap is because they they messed up their hdd and dont have their epprom backed up on their pc.

Yeah, but that's only if you didn't back up your eeprom. If I've got this straight: As long as you do have your eeprom.bin backed up somewhere and you make a bootable xboxhdm CD with your eeprom.bin on it - you don't need to hotswap. You can just format the hard drive in a PC without having to do the hotswap. This is how I fixed my error 13. Did not have to hotswap, but did have to hook the hd up in a PC and use xboxhdm bootable CD.

So, I think your quote should read...
"If you don't have your eeprom backed up, and you mess up your Xbox you only got 3 options... 1 hotswap, 2 mod chip, 3 new xbox."

But I'm the n00b, so I may not be saying it right Razz

said....

you do a hotswap when you try everything else and a hotswap as where noting else was possible meaning no eeprom.bin or any such thing...

so i was just saying to what chrils said
