Hello X-box modders,
I'm complete new in x-box modding! I've got an old x-box (2002),
1) I presume it it is an x-box v1.0 , but i can't find the version number on the x-box...
2) I want to soft-mod the x-box, is the techfreak manual the best way to do this?
3) Is there a way to oftmod it without having Splinter Cell or the other mentioned games?
4) I want to put a large HD in the x-box, can i put in any HD? And again is the techfreak 10 mins manual a good way to do this?
5) The dvd-rom is a bit crappy, it has problems reading several discs! Can i put a different DVD-rom in my x-box?
Thnx

Not without a modchip, no. (Chips are a good alternative though.. more flexible in the long run too, and assuming you don't have any supplies or a friend with the supplies needed to softmod, a cheap chip is more cost effective as well)

If you want to upgrade the HDD I *highly* reccommend getting a chip; it'll make your life easier and you wont have to deal with locking/etc. But if you're set on a softmod, any guide should do (Again, I'm not really familiar with the techfreak guide at all)

Yes, you can. All xbox DVD drives are interchangable with each other. (Though standard PC dvd drives are not, at least not without modifcation and an appropriate firmware). _________________ OTB Mods.com

appleguru's advice on the DVD reader is good advice, heck they are pretty cheap, so buy a new one and install it while your modding.
For a noob, I still stand firm that upgrading a hard drive with a chip in the Xbox is way easier than fugging with a softmod. No offense Gus. Pull out old, install new, boot AID, format and boom done. No PC's, no other xboxes needed, it's you the chip and the hdd.
If indeed it's a V1.0, I recommend the Xenium with the solderless adapter.
Your V1.0 mobo has all pinheaders previously filled with solder, so that would otherwise have to be sucked out first unless you go solderless. _________________ http://twitter.com/HQ_Shark2th

Wow, I'm really positively suprised by these great and quick replies!
It is indeed a classic V1.0 Xbox
I still haven't made up my mind about preforming a soft or hard mod... But I think i will try the softmod, I have acces to another modded xbo and i have a memory unit, so i think i'll only need to buy one of the games..
When I'll decide to hardmod my x-box, I'm thinking of buying the duox 2 Cromwell/Flashbios chip.
Ps. Nice shop, appleguru, i live in the Netherlands, there aren't many nice mod shops over here!!

Well, that's not exactly true.. but.. there's not much of a point in installing a chip AND a softmod
If you're comfortable soldering, a cheap chip like a duox2 is definitely the way to go. If not, I'd say go for the softmod and if you mess it up (which you shouldn't, especially with SID ), then get a solderless chip to fix it
I'm not much of a fan of solderless chips though
Also, with a 1.0, you could also do a dual bios TSOP flash.. those are fun and have most of the features a chip would, with the ability to switch between bioses with the flick of a switch... Not exactly n00b friendly though, and if you mess up flashing the tsop.. that's bad _________________ OTB Mods.com

I have decided to go for the softmod! But I'm already running in some problems... I have the needed ingredients:
- Memory card
- Splinter cell
- Pc network
- Unmodded xbox v1.0
- Modded xbox
But my problem is that the savegame with the linux installer on my memorycard doesn't open in the Splintercell game.. My xbox simply freezes. Right now I'm searching for new hacker save games for splinter cell. So I'll keep you all informed about my progress!
Thanx for all the tips!

The version of Splintercell is non-platinum, so that can't be the problem. At this moment i don't know what the sid version is... I'm going to try it again in a few hours with a new savegame version!

If you click on the link at the top of the page for AIDeluxe.com, you have two options: Download the SID4.5 torrent. With the torrent I got it in about 15 minutes. I'm seeding it now
The other option is if you download AID3.0, extract the files with cxboxtools(also at the top), and navigate through the files directory, you can find the SID4.5 files in there, no torrents.

Just for future reference, there IS a way to Soft-mod without the use of an exploitable game!
It uses Xbox HDM 1.9 and the ltools UDE exploit(very old)! after you get that installed you can boot AID 3.0 and re-Softmod with SID 4. _________________ I think I like fixing Boxes more than using them!
