Viperbe,
I think you're in the same boat I am.
If your HDD is fried and you don't have an eeprom backup then your only option is to get a modchip and a new Hard Drive.
Depending on what is wrong with your Hard drive you could try freezing it like LEE337 suggested in my thread Here. It didn't work for me, but it's worth a try.
I too had to learn the hard way that YOU MUST ALWAYS BACKUP YOUR EEPROM BEFORE SOFTMODDING. (You need the backup on your PC 'cause if it's only on your XBOX HDD and it fails...Welcome to the club! )
I am going to pick up a Duo-X2 chip today, I'll let you know how it goes.
Good Luck!

OK, I got my chip, opened up the box took a look at the D0 point and promptly closed it up again. There was no way I was going to be able to solder that tiny little point without burning a hole through the board. Luckily my brother-in-law's cousin is experienced with this. It took him a week, but I finally got my xbox back chipped and mostly functional.
Now I get an error code 5 upon booting to retail dash, not the chips fault, just an unlocked drive(Maxtor 6E030L0). I haven't tried locking it yet, I have no reason to use retail dash, it's just a pain to get a service message every time you boot using the eject button!
All in all I'm quite happy with the Duo-X2 chip.
After all it only cost $20.00 plus a case of beer to have it installed.(don't worry the beer was opened only after the soldering was finished )

Here's some thoughts:
Error 8-9
Your Xbox motherboard is having trouble communicating with the Hard Drive. Check cables, this is probably due to an ATA controller on the motherboard and not due to the hard drive itself. (my personal experience, try replacing the hard drive and see how it goes) My recommendation for most is to replace the Motherboard and Hard drive as a pair.
