hi all,

i'm new to the forum, and i've had a good search for the answer to my problem and couldn't find what i need, but if i've missed something, please just point me in the right direction.

i've got a softmodded xbox (not sure the version atm, but built in 2002), with unleashx installed and i want to upgrade from stock hdd to a 200gb drive. I checked the new drive is lockable - all good, so i went ahead and used xboxhdm to do the upgrade.

the guy who softmodded it originally for me had already created backups of the c and e drives plus the eeprom, so i ftp'd these all to my pc, overwriting the folders in the unzipped xboxhdm directory. ran the appropriate .bat file and made the iso.

i burnt this to cd and stuck the new hdd in my pc (as master) and ran through the steps to build a new xbox hdd from scratch as per the tutorials from this site. All worked well, (locked the drive and all) and then swapped the retail xbox hdd for the new one.

with the new hdd installed, the xbox will only boot to the ms dash, not unleashx, and i can no longer ftp to it. From the tutorials, i was under the impression that i should be able to just install the new hdd and have all the apps etc that were on the retail hdd (after softmodding) there and running.

am i missing something? i read another post from someone with the same problem, who suggested cloning the retail hdd instead, but so far i haven't been able to track down any tutorials on how to do so?

btw, i have put the original hdd back in and unleashx boots off it fine still. I also tried setting the jumper on the new hdd to cable select instead of master, but it made no difference.

from memory, when i used xboxhdm to creat the new hdd, it wouldn't reboot or power down fully (by typing reboot and poweroff at the appropriate times) - it just hung, so after a few minutes each time, i performed a hard reboot/poweroff, so i'm thinking maybe i did something screwy there?

was thinking maybe i should try the whole process again - if i do, will i need to unlock the new 200gb drive before building it from scratch again?

any help would be appreciated,

cheers,
adam.

When it boots to MS dash, look and see if any of the old files from UnleashX/The softmod are still there. If so, then you could probably just redo the softmod itself, especially if the new 200GB HDD is already in there and it seems to work fine w/ it in w/ no error codes.

what you did was using the C backup (ms-dash) and not the softmodded C backup .

so what you need to do is put the old retail hd back in the xbox .

ftp your C drive to your pc

put those files in the folder and recreate the cd

now it will use the softmodded files instead the retail ms-dash backup

cheers

pirrup

metalbeast.

Here's your answer: http://xbox-hq.com/html/xbox-tutorials.html

Look in #3 of the 10 most Popular.

How hard is this?

ONTOPIC: If the new hdd is working, heck , your good, but you may want to see if you can boot a disc like AID, if that works, simply install a dash, and see if that works, if it doesn't, then just use your memory card and put the gamesaves back in the box, and run the softmod installer. and you should be fine.

thanks guys,

pirrup - yeah, i suspect i may have done what you suggested - i remember when copying the files, that i thought I'd better be careful to get the root level C, not the copy of C in the E:\backups folder, but it seems most likely I copied the original one from backups over by mistake.

I'll try xboxhdm again with the modded C drive and see how that goes. Does anyone know if I need to unlock the new drive before doing so? (I think xboxhdm has a utility to unlock as well lock drives, yeah?)

I'm assuming that without a non-ms dash, i can't get ftp access to the box, so I can't just ftp the modded C drive back over instead?

I'm just about to head off on holidays for the next 3 weeks or so, so I won't get a chance to try it until after that, but I'll be sure to post back how it goes in case it helps someone else in future...

Cheers,
ads.

ok, i finally got a chance to try everything again...

had a look at all the files on the xboxhdm boot disc i had already created, and they appeared to be the ones from the modded C drive (not the copy of C from E:\backups\Cdrive), but just to be sure, I ftp'd the modded C and E drives to my pc again and made another xboxhdm boot disc.

unlocked the 200gb hdd and tried building it from scratch again, locked it and put it in the xbox - same problem - it would only boot to the ms dash, not unleashx, unlike the modded original hdd.

so instead, i cloned the original hdd over to the new 200gb drive and it worked fine (had to unlock both drives first in order to clone, then lock the new one again afterwards). Put the new hdd in the xbox and voila - all working - boots to unleashx and approx 180gb assigned to f drive.

if it helps anyone else at all, here's the link to the instructions I followed: http://forums.xbox-scene.com/index.php?showtopic=244043
