I thought someone might find this useful since it took me 3 days to work out how to recover data from my crashing hard disk!!
I had slow boot problems running xbmc as my dash on an xecuter2 hardware modded box. Reallly slow boot and menu nav + occasional momentary freezing in games.
As i suspected, my 250GB hard drive is crashing. (retry errors slow it down when it access the disk, even in the menus and occasionally in games) bigger drives run a lot hotter than the stock 10Gb drives. I only got just under 3 years out of my 250 and it was running nearly 24/7 for the last 18 months as part of my home media system. (heat is the enemy of HDD's)
Im using xboxhdm 1.9 to rescue what i can off the 250 and copying it to a new 400.
Its taken me 3 days to work out how to do it, since the drive got so bad it wouldnt even boot past the xbmc logo anymore.
Xbrowser in xboxhdm doesnt automatically mount 2 hard disks either, so i had to work that one out too.
I had to manually mount /dev/hdc55 to get F drive to show up in xbrowser.
xboxhdm has saved my life!! to rip the 80 odd games from the net again would take forever!!! I tried FTP backup but it was just hopeless and kept timing out.
still copying, averaging about 3Mbytes sec... only doing a few games at a time since i know how long a single 4gb games takes to copy now i know when i should give up and move on to the next game set... so far managed to get everything back!
hope this helps someone!

If you OWNED the games you wouldn't have had this emergency. Personally, I hope your new 400GB HDD fails just after you put in all that time copying your precious STOLEN property over.

Thanks for the recovery experience phatbox_au! I'll try to keep this in the back of my pin head in case I read someone going through the same situation. Irregardless as to whether there were downloaded games involved or retail, the data here could prove very useful and I'm damn glad it wasn't me in that situation. I might not have been so fortunate. _________________ http://twitter.com/HQ_Shark2th

My two cents:
If you like a game, buy it! Support the hard work that goes into them. If everything was stolen, we would have none! I constantly hear how horrible m$ and Bill Gates are. Where would we be without them???????? Sooooo, thank you for info on recovery! And 50% still dosent cut it legally! they dont cut the sentence in half for that.
Name calling isnt nice either

Agreed 100%. I must admidt, it is tempting to rent a game and burn it to the hard drive, but all I have to do is remember I wouldn't shop lift that same game from a store, no matter how easy it might be...
Also, there are plenty of LEGAL ways to get cheap legit copies of games on the Xbox these days. Ebay is full of 6+ month old titles for under $15, shipped. And most stores have sales these days for $19 on lots of titles.
I hack my box for an awesome media box to watch what I want, and to not have to swap disks in and out (and if I take my box with me some where, I hate to pack all the games I MIGHT want to play on it).
And, yes, I have a MAME cabinet. Nothing illegal about MAME, just the ROM's that you either BUY to play legally on it or copy illegally. Same goes for other emulators like N64, SNES, Atari, and Colecovision (either you own the original ROM's or you don't).
