I've always been VERY upset that the remote control for the XBox (media kit or whatever) will only power OFF the XBox, not back on.
Now that I have a modded XBox, it is even more annoying, because once you launch a game from the HDD, I can't really exit that game and launch the dashboard ever again to load a new game or to run another application without hard powering off/on the unit. And that means I have to haul my lazy ass up out of my chair.
Sure do wish there was a mod chip that would recognize a combo controller button sequence that would restart the BIOS (like START-BACK-left-right trigger all at the same time would reboot your dashboard/BIOS).
Sigh.

Almost all bios now by default have IGR (in game restart) You do in fact hold a few buttons down at the same time, and then it restarts, the default is normally both triggers + back + black, also it could be both triggers + both thumbsticks down. _________________

OMFG. Thank you! I need to see if I have that enabled. I saw a couple posts about disabling IGR if you were having problems, so I just disabled it...never knew that was "In Game Restart".
Woot!!! Thanks!
Heheh...I knew I couldn't be the FIRST one to think of that.

Son-of-a-bitch. Mine works great just holding both right-left triggers and the Start and Back buttons at the same time. Now how the hell did I suggest that, and it was already exactly that??? I just thought of the most unlikely combos to be used.
I can't believe it was that simple.
This is TONS better (thanks sjohn!!!)
Funky, what is your power button wired to? Is that a special controller you bought or did you jury-rig it yourself (wire it into the power button on the console)?

Very cool. Wonder if that can be applied to a wireless controller as well? Hum. I may just have to try ruining one of my old MadCatz 900MHz wireless controllers.
Thanks,

nope that only works on wired controllers. the only decent way to turn the box on/off without wires is to use the ir mod _________________ .

Can't use IR...box is completely enclosed in my MAME Cabinet. I need an RF solution.
I'm still going to pop open my MadCatz and see if they will broadcast the light gun signal that is available in there...it won't work to turn it on, but maybe to turn it off. Ah, screw it...that doesn't do me any good, anyway (all my dashboards can turn it off).

Ive always wondered if that would work. But more really making it send a "low" signal throught the RF controller and have a transistor Xbox side that is inline with the yellow wire that would reproduce that low signal and Ground the yellow wire....(that would ba a PNP type transistor you would need I beleive) use the transistor's Base in series with a diode to protect the RF dongle)
Grounding the "yellow line" pre-RF Broadcster on the controller should = 0 that is unless the transmitter is low active. If you own a logic probe you can pulse the yellow line with a low voltage and see if the signal is reproduced on the yellow line on the Xbox side (provided they actually put the "yellow wire" into the RF remotes design.)
To see if it is included in the design I would start with looking at the RF dongle and see if there is a contact for the yellow wire. If so I would open up the bugger and see weither that contact dead ends or actually leads into the circuit. If so then the tougher part would be figuring where the yellow wire would end up after its signal is transmitted, seeing that there is no memory card slot on RF controllers to conserve energy.
Which is the reason I say start at the dongle, cause it would be teh suck if ya spent all that time looking for the neddle in a haystack if you found out that the neddle never existed.
Anyhow I would do it myself, lord knows ive thought about it many times before, but alas I dont own a wireless remote. Tis the woes of a broke ass nerd that cant afford the shit he wants to take apart. _________________ -Scourge "Rx = +/_\"

A simple way to do the IR mod, especially if you don't feel like opening the xbox, is the doorbell method. You just make it so your xbox is always on, than plug the power for it into the doorbell base which will give it power when pressed.

Of course if that dosent work you could always still do the RF Mod. If using your cabnet I would route the Xbox IR dongle to the top section where your Marquee is in a dark spot, if you can make a small secton transparent again and place the IR mod and the Xbox IR dongle side by side with some developed (black looking) film in front of them. This will black out the area, and place a small box on the back of it so that light wont go through.
Or you could build it into the body and put a small "receiver box" less than a sqare inch in size. Just use severely tinted plexi or plastic to make it look good.
Oh yeah, I have a restart button on my Big Duke controller, but lately Ive been doing boxes that have the smaller controller, and I notice that the RF controllers are smaller too. Just this weekend I did a mod and used one of the smaller pushbutton switches, similar to the one found on the PCB of the front panel, except the top was allot longer to be able to reach through a panel better. I would drill the hole (slightly wider on the inside of the controller, solder the wires onto the switch, scratch the hell out of the area the hole is around on the inside to roughen it up, then ready some JB-weld. that stuff is AWSOME!! within an hour its rock solid, holding tight to the plastic AND keeping the miniature button in place.
kills the hell out of the larger, dinkyier spring loaded pushbutton switches (like I have on mine). part of the problem withthe larger one is finding where the hell there is room, with this method, there are virtually no limitations of space.
It looked Reallly Nice, and flush mounted to prevent an accidental off since its so sensitive. In fact soon Im going to buy another Big Duke off of E-bay just so I can mount a smaller (more sensitive) cold boot switch. _________________ -Scourge "Rx = +/_\"

I'm not very good at explaining, but if you search for the doorbell mod on the internet, you will find it.
I read about the Doorbell RF mod. Really I cant say I cared for it too much mainly cause I would have to carry around a doobell ringer wherever I would go, I travel allot with my box, and my friends would have a laugh fest if I pulled out my Xbox and turned it on with a doorbell button... But if I was just going to be sitting in one place when I use it then why not send a long signal wire there made out of audio cable and just forfeit the excess battery use. I also didnt like the idea of a doorbell attached to my xbox... Living in the southeast of the US I have to be careful to not fall into the normal SE-US steriotypes, so that is also why Ive never put ducttape on my Xbox (though it has seen the use of box-tape).
Though his box IS inside of a cabnet, and if he dosent mind more batteries to change Im sure there would be a way he could mount the doorbell unit on a lower, not-so-visible shelf.
"The new 'Burnout: Revenge' Game? OF COURSE IVE GOT IT!!! Just lemme turn on the xbox right quick!"
(Special Edit:) I just want to say kdx80boy I am in no way poking fun at you... I just saw this as an excelent chance to divulge my feelings about that particular RF mod. As always, thanks for your input, every little bit helps everyone make better desisions! _________________ -Scourge "Rx = +/_\"

I take no offense to your statement. The only reason I suggested the doorbell trick is because it is not IR. You don't have to have a receiver aimed directly to pick it up. And it is just real easy and cheap to do, you can't mess it up. Also, batteries last a very long time in the doorbell thing, unless you constantly press the button, you should be fine for a long while.
I too live in the SE, but I think its funny how redneck some of this stuff is as well as how well it works.
PS. the cabinet should have flames on it somewhere to make it extra cool (ironic huh). Also, I would add a spoiler and ground effects with a hoodscoop too just to make it extra rednecky. _________________ XBOX- V1.0
