Ok, I've asked this question before and NO one has been able to help me. I need to know how to play Roms on my XBOX. I have a million emulators, and I've downloaded roms on my pc but can't get them to play. I have found no tutorials, and the answers I get are always the same "ftp the file to your rom folder and that's it" Well that don't work. There must be other things I'm supposed to do, and since I really know jack Squat about roms I really need some detailed help. The emulators I would use the most are MameOX and Surreal 64. Gracias!!

I would say file extensions.....I downloaded the SNES rom pack off the VIP FTP server and they didn't have any extensions on them...so I can't read/play them. There are too many to name....does any one know of a mass file renamer, to just rename the format. _________________ XBOX v1.6

For MameOX, Surreal64 and many other emus the roms stay in the .zip form. The roms should be placed in the roms folder along with the bios if emu calls for it. (Ex: FBAXXX requires neogeo.zip to be placed in roms folder along side the roms). IMPORTANT: if rom path does not point to where you stored your roms... guess what? You won't find any roms when you try to play the emu . That means you must correct the rom path or just put the roms where the rom path points to. Some emus allow you to edit the rom path on the Xbox emu itself, i think Surreal64 works that way (don't remember). Anyways, good luck dude. _________________ [XBOX v1.6b / Xecuter 3 CE / Western Digital Caviar SE 300GB HD / ATA166 IDE Cable / XCM Cystal Clear Case / Red Firework LED 80mm Fan / 12v Fan Mod / UnleashX Default Dash]

I have thousands of ROMs on my box and dont know dookie about how exactly they work here is what I did to make everything work out nice and tidy.
first I used the XBOX-HQ AI to put the emulators in the right places for me... no muss no fuss!!! Next I went to our nifty, handy dandy FTP servers and DLED the Roms, this can take some time, but it seems you already have this part taken care of
Within the EMU folders that the AI out in you box within thoes folders you will find a directory labeled in some sort of way to signify where to put your ROMS. Im not being specific because sometimes the names are diffrent, but when you see the directory youll know.
Then youll have it.
So in conclusion, you dont have to use the AID to do the inital install, I never do, but it makes loading apps a hell of allot easier, and is a GREAT tool to learn by. I used the AID to learn how to properly set up an Xbox for the first time I did it. Since then Ive developed my own way of doing things, but nonetheless, it it wasnt for DJBs tool, I wouldnt be anywhere I am now.
And for you Mr. PopTop I use two programs for renameing files BaRenameX (Im sure you have it already tho) to makesure my files make it to the Xbox fine and for general renameing I use FileMonkey its free, its easy, it gets the freakin job done... BUT BEWARE!!! THERE IS NO UNDO FUNCTION, so be sure you know that what you are about to do is what you want it to do. Either way tho I use it alllll the time, especially when I have a DLed package of 1000s of files I wish to trunicate the name or just rename. _________________ -Scourge "Rx = +/_\"

See this is where I believe my problem lies. I have no idea how to change file names, and I don't know what I should change them to. I think it depends on the roms. _________________ V1.1

Could you clarify that for me?
Im sure you know how to change filenames, but maybe you mean in a diffrent context than Im thinking of.
Do you mean you are having trouble figuring out what name you should name each ROM?
When it comes to renaming I would do it on the PC for ease of use then FTP them to your Xbox.
Also keep in mind when it comes to ROMS, most Emulators read ROM files that are in *.zip format. so if you have a mass ROMS that are zipped dont unzipthem. Manytimes inside of the zipped files there are other files that have names nothing like the games (I think MAME roms are that way if I remember correctly) so in most cases, you can UNrar them, but don't unzip them. _________________ -Scourge "Rx = +/_\"

Well what I mean is that I have heard that with roms, once you donwload them offline you have to change the extension or something on the file. FOr instance I downloaded an xmen rom for mameox on my pc. I keep it zipped , but all the files say .bin on the end of it. I think it should have something different on the end of it. _________________ V1.1

Keep it like just that.
Some Emulators read from .bin (which is short for bianary)
Such other Emulators that read from .bin is the PS1 emulator
when it says .bin that is an image of the game, as if somone took a "picture" of it.
.bin files are in many ways similar to ISOs except they are more complete.
so basically it shouldnt need to be renamed to anything.
I wish I had my Xbox with me so I could look in it and give you some examples from the Samurai Showdown ROMS I DLed for my Xbox MAME Emu.
But maybe somone else could help us out there... _________________ -Scourge "Rx = +/_\"

Last night I tried just putting the zip file in the roms folder but Nadda! I dont think I'll get these emulators to work. Maybe the rom is reading from the wrong file, but I don't know where to change that at either. _________________ V1.1

When you put "the zip file in the in the roms folder" last night, did they show up when you ran the emulator. What I am asking is: when you tried to select game, did all your roms show up (were they detected?)? If they were detected but didn't work, try d/ling from somewhere else. If they were NOT detected and didn't show up then you have neglected to change the rom path to look in the roms folder on whatever partition you placed your roms at. Lets say your emu was MAME, here's an example of a rom path: F:\Emulators\MAME\roms\ That's all there is to it, look for a file with configuration settings and edit the rom path.

Don't condemn a whole emulator just cause you can't get roms to work on it.
good luck. _________________ [XBOX v1.6b / Xecuter 3 CE / Western Digital Caviar SE 300GB HD / ATA166 IDE Cable / XCM Cystal Clear Case / Red Firework LED 80mm Fan / 12v Fan Mod / UnleashX Default Dash]

It won't read at all. I've never gotten one of these things to work. So I will try to edit the rom path and hopefully I can find that. I really hope this works, I've been really excited to see these emulators in action _________________ V1.1

I know in mameox you can go into options (start button), use l/r triggers, & on 1 pge or another you will see a rom path setting. There you can type/edit the rom file path to where you ftp'ed them. Also, some times you have to rescan your hd when loading new roms otherwise mameox wont see them. Use your start button while in mameox and select 'scan for roms'.
Lastly, for me mameox didnt see all my roms- because there were too many- There is a limit to how many entries it can have in 1 folder. I had to make 3 rom folders and split the roms into them. Then redirected mameox to find them with the opt method above. I made 3 folders: ex rom1, rom2, rom3. (inside mameox folder)
I have most of my emus in E: but I moved mameox to F: (just cause its bigger and I wont run out of space if I add more roms) along with the 3 rom folders I made and reloaded all my roms (zipped) and have had no trouble since......
I am not sure about renaming zips, wouldnt you have to update your dat or catver ini's so they would see the new names ??? I dont know...

Some jolly good advice, that! I mean the part about a limit to the# of ROMS you can store in one folder. That's the first I've heard of that! Jolly good indeed!
