Ok I have a question regarding Internet Connection Sharing between my XBOX and PC.

My goal is to be able to go into Xbox Media Center and play movies, music and other through my computer which is in the other room. Connecting the XBOX to the router is out of the question because the router is in another part of the house.

Now, I have the XBOX connected to my PC using a CAT6 RJ-45 Crossover Cable. (One end goes into the XBOX, the other goes into my Linksys PCI Ethernet Card in my computer). Under the Properties of the Network Connection (PCI Card) I have enabled Internet Connection Sharing.

Do I need to set an IP for the XBOX in settings? Do I even need to have an IP set? I am not wanting to use the internet, just to be able to browse the files of the XBOX from my PC, or vice versa.

I have the connections connected correctly, I just need the settings. If someone could help I would be much obliged.

Thank you!

if you dont want to SHARE the internet to the XBOX then really you dont need to turn on ICS.. Smile

But leave it..

1. Turn on ICS for your NIC
2. Give your xbox a ip address of:

ip: 192.168.0.2
subnett: 255.255.255.0
gateway: 192.168.0.1
dns: same as your pc dns

(DO A IP CONFIG for your dns)

IP CONFIG EXAMPLE:
1. Click Start Menu
2. Click Run
3. Type 'cmd' and press enter (WINXP)
4. Type 'ipconfig /all' amd press enter
5. it will show all your pc ip information.

Once your pc is 192.168.0.1 and your xbox is 192.168.0.2
you can then connect to it via FTP or using XBOX MEDIA CENTER..

Anyway, hope that helps.. You have alot to learn by the sounds of it.

I just have my media center set to DCHP to automatically pick up an IP when it connects (usually using whatever IP the box grabs when it boots through UnleashX) and use the "Workgroups (SMB)" option to access my computer under the various categories. Hell, for UnleashX to connect to the internet for anything (Gamesaves, dash updates, skins, etc...) it's gotta be set to DCHP, static won't work for some daffy reason.

if you can already ftp etc then all you have to do is setup shares..
Right click a folder you want to share on your PC and click on SHARING.. Then give it a name.

Then all you have to do is setup your XBMC with the correct USERNAME/PASSWORD of your windows machine and the SHARE NAME.

easy..

anyway, hope that helps.. I havent done it in ages.

If you're using windows XP, and I assume you are. There is no password if you boot up your computer and it goes straight to your desktop. If it does ask for a password (User names, you click on one, the password box appears, blah blah) use that username and password. When all else fails, just log in as Admin (no pass) as long as no one's passworded the Admin account (and most, average people don't even bother) then you can log straight in using that account. BUT if you boot your computer, you see the "Windows XP" with the happy bar at the bottom scrolling left to right, and after that it goes straight to the desktop, just click one "Workgroups (SMB)" on XBMC and it should show you a list of your Shared Folders.

I'd like to expand the question a bit further, for my own purposes.

I've got a small network here (four computers plus one XBOX). I'm interested in accessing files through XBMC, but XBMC doesn't even see the network shares, or even the computers themselves on my LAN, even though it has no trouble accessing the Internet at all. However, all the computers can see each other, and I can even FTP the XBOX from all of the computers on the LAN. Firewall isn't an issue, because the computers within the LAN aren't firewalled when I'm trying to do all of this.

Here's my LAN setup if it'll help. This network is all wired; I don't trust wireless networking. Too many pringles-can incidents going on these days for that kind of thing. Computers are running Win2k Pro SP4 and WinXP Pro x86-64 edition. XBOX is a softmod, with UnleashX dashboard, and the XBMC app that came with the AID 2.0 (patched to 2.02) disc.

-One computer hooked up to the Internet and shared through ICS (this computer has two NICs; one for Internet, one for LAN)
-The LAN-connected NIC from the ICS-enabled computer runs to a 100Mbps switch in my living room, which connects the rest of the computers (yes, there are three computers in the living room; I am a gamer after all) and the XBOX.
-All computers have the same set of network protocols installed and have no problems connecting to each other's network shares whatsoever. I can also FTP to the XBOX with no problems from all of the computers connected to the LAN.

Ok I finally got it working.

From my computer, I can FTP my xbox fine and everything.

However, from my XBOX (namely XBOX Media Center), when I got WORKGROUPS, then go to "MYWORKGROUP" it asks for a username and password.

Well, the Administrator username for my computer is Admin and there is no password, so I tried that and no go. I also tried no username and no password, no go.

Any suggestions?

Thanks guys
