my freind recently downloaded some illegal software from limewire....and he's just curious if its possible for the FBI or any other federal assocication to track down the person who shared the file to him and that he can be caught to or something like that.... I mean i know that each computer gets a certain limit for what they can download from thier internet provider...But is it anyway possible if the FBI catches that person who shared the file to him and that he can be caught too from his IP?

In sort Yes it is. I am an IT/MIS director for a company in Vegas and can monitor such things on my network. I have a friend who does the some thing for a cable company that provides cable internet serverice to this area and many others around the country and I have asked him the same question. And he also said yes, we/they use sniffers to search for different things, it is kind of technical and I really see no need to to into deep detail.
But yes the FBI or anyother law inforcement agancy can track such things. But they are more interested in the ones hosting, but that is by no means saying that downloading won't get you in trouble.
The fact is it is Theft, and if you are a thief you will get caught sooner or later. _________________ XBOX v1.6

so your saying my friend can get caught if the person who hosted or shared the file to him gets caught.....but again how can my freind get caught...he downloaded it..he didn't host it or anything. how can his IP get tracked from the host from limewire.. i mean he isnt downloading anymore

It doesnt matter whether he is hosting or downloading.. You are still stealing... I know of several people who have been in trouble for downloading movies and games (NOT HOSTING).. They have been warned and if caught again thats it.
its really not worth it guys... Just buy the stuff you need.. I Do.. Seriously.. If you dont buy any software all these software/game designers will go broke and their will be nothing to get anyway.
