i cant do that my machine harddrive is no good i think i cant get on any dashboard besides i want to pgrade my hdd _________________ xbox v1.0

if you had a modchip installed all you would need to do is:
1. INSTALL the NEW HDD into your xbox
2. Boot the AID2 in the XBOX DVDROM drive with your modchip activated.
3. The AID2 will ask if you want to prepare/foramt.. You select YES
4. DONE.
INSTALL ALL THE APPS FROM THE AID2 disc..
Upgrading a hdd in a softmodded xbox is a completely different approach..
I have no ideas how its done with a softmod as i never have time to try it due to the amount of pm's some people send which is ridiculous.

You need to understand that what forahobby is saying is not that he doesn't know what a softmod is, it's that he is not the support for softmods. Second, this is really starting out in the wrong forum since Configmagic is not an auto installer and this most likely should be moved to the softmod forum. You should be able to send it to your Xbox and run it... hang on. Let me see what I can find.
Based on what little info I have, I think this should cover your issue.
Once you get the xbox softmodded (and I assume that you have), the hard drive is the fun part.
Easy Way: Use configmagic to backup the eeprom, ftp that to your computer. back up the c: and e: drives to your computer as well. Find xboxhdm (linux iso for your pc) and make the iso with the c\, e\, and eeprom folders (rename your eeprom backup to eeprom.bin!) and burn.
Take your new hard drive, set it to master, take your computer, remove all the hard drive cables, plug the new hard drive in as primary master, and make sure you have a cdrom drive set up on secondary master or primary slave or whatever. Boot xboxhdm. select option 1. type 'xboxhd' after it boots up. select the option to build a new xbox hd. run through all that bs, making partitions, blah, copying data off the cd, etc. reboot the computer, select option 3 on boot (locking/unlocking) and do 'lockhd -a' after you get a prompt. if you put your eeprom backup in the right place, it'll lock the drive for you, and you're all set to take it out, set it to cable select, and put it in your xbox. Huah!
hard way (no eeprom backup):
you need to get the key, so softmod the xbox, install configmagic, make sure your xbox case is open. write down the hd unlock key, and stick it on that hard drive on a post-it or something. while the xbox is running, and in configmagic, unplug the power to the drive, then the ide cable. take your new hd, plug in the ide cable, then plug in the power. hit start in configmagic to bring up the menu, and go to 'unlock hard drive'. configmagic will say 'drive is already unlocked!' and then rescan the hardware. the dvdrom will be missing, and you'll get a new key for the hd unlock pass. write that shit down, double and triplecheck it!. then, go through the easy steps, except when you go to lock the drive, use 'lockhd -p [32 char unlock key for the new drive]'. if you wrote it down right, it'll work when you throw it in the xbox. if it gives you an error, you'd better hope you make the same typo twice when you use unlockhd -p. _________________ http://twitter.com/HQ_Shark2th

You will see a nice screen listing the detected drives on your system. At the far right you will see a column with the heading:
S E L F X V
Under each letter you will see either a plus sign + or a minus sign -.
Verify that the S has a plus sign under it and that the ALL of the other entries are minus signs. If you see a plus sign under the F this normally indicates that your drive arrived frozen from the factory and it cannot be modified. This is extremely RARE.
If you only see a single minus sign under the S and nothing else, then your hard drive does not fully support the ATA command set. E.G. it is not an ATA66 or better hard drive and is too old to use.
Any other combinations indicate that your motherboard may not be communicating with the drive properly and you may need to perform this procedure on another computer.
