This is a shot in the dark, but my question is wierd.
This question does not promote using illegally owned games:
I backed up my purchased version of Halo 2 onto my Xbox HD. If I turn my mod chip off, I still have the option to load the game through the MS dashboard.
I'm too scared to try this...but if I load the game from the MS Dashboard (without the disc being inserted into the Xbox) and play Halo 2 online...will this work without me being kicked off?

You must have the game in the DVDROm drive..
Unfortunately if you try to play the game from the hdd it will know that it is not a orriginal dvdrom and will ban your xbox.

Actually the best way to look at it is, it's impossible to play a backed up game on XBOX live...
Why you may ask...well, here's the answer
To play backups you must have your hacked bios running. If you login to XBL with a hacked bios...BAN!! You are just banned without even getting a chance to load the game.
If you disable your chip and login to XBL with the Xbox MS bios, then try to load your backup your Xbox wont even read the disk. The MS bios won't allow it, hence the reason for needing a mod chip to play backups. Its not the chip that allows the game to play, it's the bios that you have flashed to the chip. It gives permissions to the Xbox to boot games from DVD-R/+R etc...
