Hi. I just finished this last night and was wondering if anyone else has done this mod before (I'm new on the scene so don't really know what's going on ): I have installed a 802.11b WIFI access point, forming a bridge with another AP on my network, into my Xbox. As I was going to post a guide if no one else has.
Cheers!

Very, very nice. This is the first I've seen this too. A tutorial would be awsome on how you did it.

I'll type it up in some detail later but basically what I've used is two Netgear ME201 access points configured to act as a bridge, connecting two wired networks together over wireless.
Installation was a little tricky as there was less space for it than I'd thought but I managed to squeeze it in (see attached pics). What I've done is removed the casing of the access point, removed half the EM sheilding to reveal the non-componant side of the board (and to reduce it's size slightly), Then cut both the antenna cables and soldered a length of RG174 onto the primary antenna cable (on the right-hand side, when facing the front of the board), attaching the cable sheilding to that of the device. The USB, power and Ethernet connectors were removed from the access point. A molex power splitter was soldered onto the device along with an ethernet cable (fed through a hole in the back of the Xbox, to connect with the Xbox's own adaptor) in crossover configuration. The indecator LEDs were jumpered off the board to reduce height. The RG174 was then connected to a female SMA bulkhead which is fed through a hole drilled in the back of the Xbox, where an antenna is attached. The device is then placed as seen in the pics towards the back of the Xbox, as close to the centre torxscrew hole as possible (area with most free space) and with the top EM sheilding removed from the Xbox replace the lid, which is a very tight squeeze.
The lack of EM sheilding worries me slightly but I haven't experienced any adverse affects, the worst thing to come of it I can imagine is some interference to the TV (which I haven't noticed). I'm gunna try and get the access point in with the sheilding, which will probably involve trimming the internals of the Xbox lid.
The ME201 was used because of it's low profile, price and the fact that it required a 5V supply voltage (850mA current).
A cable grommit would be a VERY good idea for the cable coming from the back of the Xbox to restrict movement, but I haven't got any kicking around at the moment.
If someone tries this I would consider using the Xbox's official wireless adaptor as it looks like it may have a smaller profile, but I can't find a good enough spec to find out.

damn you did squeeze that thing in there... nice work.
the sheilding is kinda option although it is for keep interfernce from entering or leaving the xbox. i personally havent had any problems with not using the shielding but my xbox isnt really close to any other electronic devices.

i was just thinking the same thing... some other options could be using asus, netgear, linksys, ect game adapter/wireless brige.

An adaptor to fit down behind the DVD drive would be the best solution. If anyone tries this please post it up, would be interesting to see

Thanks RIP, only way I could get it in was to remove the IDE cable retainer. I had a shallower hard disk in the Xbox a while ago and it would've sat nicely on that but it was only 30GB .

Second I've seen. Yours, however, is a lot cleaner, and in a much better position. _________________ There are 10 types of people in this world: those who understand binary, and those who can't.
