Doing some general poking around I stumbled on a article that mentioned a new DVD drive model to surpas the Samsung drives. Apparently on 1.6 and upwards boxes that were manufactured later 2004 and onwards there is a drive made by Hitachi & LG. This drive works at 16x compared to the sammy's 5x and reads just about all media including dvd +-r.
I have seen these retail for $109 on http://secure.llamma.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=22&products_id=295 but I was wondering, If there was a PC equivilant, could it be flashed with the XBOX firmware to create a nice alternative
Yet more rummaging dug up this ad http://www.leontosse.com/hi16xdvdr.html which seems to be pretty close to the specs listed for the XBOX version, and look, only $64 normally.
2 questions really, one, is this the pc equivilant and therefore could it be used in an xbox to play originals
and two if a pc drive has xbox firmware can it be used on a pc? say for example to make a backup of a game without going via a modded xbox first? _________________ XBOX v1.4

I have tested this drive, and it was slower than the Samsung.
When using a DVD-R with AID 1.0.1 it was slightly slower than the samsung in installing 35 emulators and the complete set of Commodore 64 roms. Still, a lot better than the Thompson drive was! _________________ Good Deals: Death@Hand, funkydopenloven, StaticMind, Slamscaper, PorscheXboxter

I had been following a long 3 month discussion on the drive, I was in the process of modding a GDR 8163b. I accidentally burnt the drive with a shock.. But the firmware is on xbins courteousy of the Dangerous Bros and a shop owner in Aus. tagged Wenid. Some were working in conjuction with the french xbox modding site and put together a relatively fair modification.
The drive itself is about 22 us dollars on newegg.com, i also got mine from walmart.
They are having problems locating the ready point. It seems unlike the samsung that it has a ready generated from the init. signal on the drive, however it is delayed to which they are tryinig to map. Also, they are having a slow movement on the mod b/c they were in search of someone with an oscilloscope. They are looking for the ready patterns created in the init values of the opentray/closetray and the init, (also nothing if there is a disc in the drive as well, the voltage is dropped in one place, inverted to another.
Only Wenid has had any luck, he has an older build date on the drive with the same firmware initially. he used an IDE Extractor to pull the firmware off the GDR 8050 and flash it to his. His however was under debate to his choice in creating a faux ready signal. He chose to use an analog chip (an LM324 Op amp 4 channel) as opposed to a digital chip (ie a hex inverter) that would translate the necessary voltage and when read as 0 volts, there are still binary bit being transfered. He came under mass flaming from individuals new to the project and resigned. Another member TruBB has been trying to keep it up.
He was the link between the french and english site. He was the one to get the oscilloscope and get the patterns, but he is having a hard time finding the signal. I am sure they are trying to progress further, the only one with any luck is, mentioned earlier, Wenid.
It is believed the slight differences on the PCB allow the chipset to correspond with the original GDR 8050L hardware.
This drive is not a replacement to the Samsung, looks like nothing will. But most modders, especially shops, will note the now rarity of the Samsung 616 series, and find it is getting more and more expensive.
The Hitachi is meant to be the replace bad drives CHEAPLY. It is definitely an upgrade from an un-tweaked thomson.
It is a farily decent drive. But for anyone who is interested here is the website, and in the forum itself you will find the french website url reference
EDIT: It also reads more media than the thomson, it was infered initially in the statement, however chose to add the footnote _________________ XBOX v1.6
