This is one for you adamant solderers (and probably a pcb etcher too as this would have to be made from scratch)

I'v got a design for a circuit that would make led's pulse left and right (ala knightrider) that basicly includes a 555 astable timer, a decoded decade counter and 5 or 10 led's and it runs automaticly so long as it has power.

My idea is to compact it so it fits into the dvd tray facia (im using a crystal xbox but it could be done on black with a bit more drilling)

My question is this, for a power supply i was wanting to run wires from the hard drive and connect them to metal strips that would run parallel to the tray on the right hand side of the dvd, fixed to the outer case. I would then run similar strips on the facia which in turn would be soldered to the pcb. Theoretically when the drive is closed the strips will make contact and power will flow through the pcb and back to the ground but i was just wondering if there were any issues over running wires / metal here and also how much of the inside of the facia can be removed without causing it to be loose

Also what is the lowest profile led's I can buy? having a work area of only 13 x 9 x 125 mm does not allow a lot of space for oversized components

any help anyone could offer would be most appreciated

keep up the excellent work HQ

I've seen what you are trying to do.

They are called circuit chasers....

There's a guy over at another forum selling them for about 10.00 (12 LED Chaser)...the last I checked that was the price..

I wanted to use one for a firemans Xbox. I wanted to get a raised painted jewel of some sort so it looked a spinning red light rolling around on top of a firetruck.

I'll see if I can dig up his email so you can get some technical info from him.

As for the metal strip thing I would get a N.O, type miniature pushbutton switch instead.
Over time the metal surface of the contacts would get dirty or corroded, because for it to work you would have to -not- insualte that metal surface.

MG is the circuit you are talking about very basic? like one chip that just has power input and a loada sequential outputs? if so then its ideal, it simpler than 555 -> 4017 combo

as for the pushbutton switch what use is that? i need power to flo to the board without the hassel of using batteries or running wires along the tray, the strip would supply power when the drive is closed and it doesnt matter about when the drive is open cos it not often.

I've never personally seen the circuits. By the time the guy got all his materials together I had the machine finished and shipped away.

A Normally open switch put against where the tray closes will make it so that power flows through the circuit when the tray is closed. Mount the button so that the edge of the tray pushes it down.

Im telling you, the metal strip will work, but dont expect it to work so well about 2-3 months later, think switches, not exposed metal.

Just a tip from someone who has been there.

The circut chaser that I was talking about powers up from the PSU. It has molex connectors so you can piggy back off of the power connector you place into the HD.
