You need to have a folder shared. I run the same setup you are wanting to use, you don't have to mess with any settings or create any accounts. Just share a folder....iI share my "my documents folder" and XBMC can see it fine. Of course, your IP settings on your XBOX and PC have to be on the same subnet..but if you can establish an FTP session, then you know thats OK.
If you have a shared folder already, make sure no firewalls are running...maybe something is being blocked.

Hi, I had the exact same problem. I could FTP with my Xbox from my PC, and I definitely had folders already shared (I had an existing network), but it would always say "Access Denied"
Then I changed the workgroup in the .xml file, and after a bit of fiddling I got a box titled "Error" with the submessage "Success".
But using the white button I changed the path to "smb://'mypc'/'sharedfolder'/" and it worked fine.
One problem I'm still having, is whenever I reboot the XBOX, the shares in XBMC are restored to the defaults, and I have to edit the path every time. Any help?
