I've just installed a xenium Ice, pinhead way.. and I get 2 reboots and then reg/green flash...

I have checked all solders for splashes and so on... also resoldered, they are beautiful.. it's a 1.6 xbox so i checked the rebuild and it's fine. I haven't lifted any solders or burnt any.

But still no luck... the LED on the chip dosen't even light up. and now if i remove the chić (except for d0 which is soldered) the xbox boots into the "Your xbox needs service" screen.

Anyone know what might be the problem?

I'm surprised you have no LED and a frag at the same time. I don't think I have encountered that one from memory...it may be that I have just installed so many of the Ice's that I dont' bother even looking at the LED right now.

Did you already put a different HD in??

If so, that is why you are getting the different language error code when you try to boot up the Xbox normally. That isn't necessarily a bad thing.. I would venture you are getting an error code with it too..like 13-21, or one of the other dash error codes?

Anyway, on with your install. If you are certain your chip install is not flawed, then I would try a different chip. Do you have another Xenium? You wont be able to test a SmartXX on that pin header because it nees the number four pin on a 1.6.

I have had some bad luck with the Xeniums. When I get a frag like that, the first thing I do is pop another chip on it. If I get a frag with that one, then I know it's my install.

Use a multimeter and check for continuity at your rebuild points. Take your time and recheck your soldering. Dont add solder unless it looks like it really needs it. Look at your connects with a magnifying glass. Make sure your LFRAME connection is good, but I would think since you are getting the power cycle then frag that the LFRAME connection is good.

If you dont mind waiting, undo the LPC Rebuild and get one of the LPC rebuild boards from SmartXX. They work on this chip. Just be careful how much heat you keep putting to this board. Every time you put heat to it you are risking burning a trace or something. Also, if you dont have the stock HD in, put it back in. I never change the stock HD until the chip is flashed.

This way, you can try booting normally and it will work instead of giving you an error. This is important in troubleshooting, esepecially if you dont know what all the codes mean. If your motherboard was damaged, then it wouldn't boot up to the regular MS dash with the chip disabled. So, that seems like good news there.

Well i did replace the harddrive yes. but after i started getting the errors i switched back to the old drive and i still get the "needs service error" will check what error code it was after work and will also get a voltmeter

I don't have another xenium unfortunately, are there any ways to check the xenium if it's working properly? is it a common chip to be flawed?

THe best way to see IMO if it was the install rather than the chip is that if it boots up fine without the chip and a stock drive installed then there was a problem with the rebuild. I think your chip is fine, but its probably not getting power.
Ill resay what ModGod allready said, check for continuity between points. Try if you can to put one probe on the point you soldered to the board and another probe on the pin. Sometimes rosin will get between the solder and the pin and make a not-so-hot connection if the solder isnt done right.

And make sure to check really close next to your solder points and see if some may cross over to another trace.

Typically, in my experience if you pop the stock HD in and get a frag, then I would have to say that you have an install issue.

I am curious to what error you are getting from the MS side...as I would think if you had an install issue you would get no video whatsoever. Then again, luckily I haven't had to deal with too many 1.6 snafu's. If I have, they have just been the power cycle three times, then a frag. Never the Customer Service Screen that you are getting.

Has anyone else received a customer service screen due to a bad solder?? Just when you think you've seen it all....lol.

As far as a flawed chip I am on the fence about the xenium ice right now. I have got a lot of bad apples in the last few months. The last batch I got, so far have all been good. Out of my last four orders this is the first order so far that I didn't find at least one bad chip.

At the moment I'm putting the box back to original to check if it boots correctly.. i checked all solders with a voltmeter and a resistance (ohm) meter to all spots soldered, throough the qires.. pins from top to bottom, pins neighbooring each other and so on...

no shorts.. all voltages are what they are supposed to be.. no problems at all with that.. so I'm thinking to check my theory I'm gonna restore the xbox except for the lpc rebuild and see what happens.

Oh.. and i still get no light from my xenium ice... i don't say that I'm sure that it's not broken.. I just know that I've handled it correctly and installed it correctly.

Just checked some boot options... i think you were right that the service message was because the wrong harddrive was installed when i booted it yesterday.

Now.

Without Xenium + no d0 = Regular boot
Without Xenium + d0 attached = Regular boot
Xenium installed = 3 times reboot frag, no LED active on xenium (yes the voltages are all correct on the pins, even with chip installed.) and red/green flash.

Seriously i think i got a doa chip... it seems like it since everything else checks out ok... shame i don't have a second chip to reference this theory.

Ya You may have a bad chip.
One more thing though, when you flip the recovery switch on the side of the chip do you get anything?

Reason why I say this is I noticed that with XOS V2.2 and up the light wont come on in the normal OS screen. If you flick the recovery switch and you see nothing then you really do have a dead arsed chip.
(hoping you dont, returns can be a biznitch sometimes)

Yes, that would be the next step, see if you can get a recovery! Just curious to the whole no LED on the chip....

I thought you'd at least get a red LED..but like I said it's been awhile since I have even bothered to look. Lately when it has come to the Xeniums if I get a frag I pop another chip in. So far ever Xenium Ice frag I have had in the last six months or so have been chip related, not install related. Three of them I was able to use the recovery switch and restore the chip. The rest I RMA'd

Also, I dont' know if you have physically been removing the chip or just disco'ing the D0 connection but make sure the chip is on the pin header correct too. I have actually seen people install the chip either backwards or missed a set of pins. I know that is basic, but I have even put a chip on wrong a few times not paying attention.

Im just hoping that it was a bad flash, its easy to mess one up, and even easier for somone who is flashing the chip in a hurry to send it out to yank it off the box before its done. Sometimes the flashing process takes awhile and some people get impatent.

Have you ever flashed a X3...lol. Man, what a pain in the ass that one can be if you flash it wrong!!

Luckily, in the few that I have installed I have not had any problems. But, I have had three people send me machines with X3s and getting the three cycle frag after trying to flash. That chip is a pain in the ass..

This one, though, unless it came preflshed or something I dont see how a flash could be the issue since he never got to the XOS screen. I am thinking it's one of two things.

Bad chip
Or, chip isn't getting power and when LFRAME is connected frag is acheived because the LPC has nothing to boot, but yet LFRAME says it's there. Which means LPC rebuild is bad.

Anyway, keep us posted for sure!

Have tried to switch the recovery switch incase it was in the wrong position from the start. but it makes no real difference.. exactly the same thing happens... no signs of life whatsoever.

also .. the LFRAME and all the other pins give the correct voltages and work fine so...
