I ordered a Spider Solderless chip for my friend who has an xbox 1.6. After opening the box up and looking for the holes to place the Spider wires I found that only two of the five holes were actually holes, the rest had the traces but no hole, not even any solder around the area. Anyhow I was wondering has anyone heard of this problem and if so is there another way to install the chip without soldering on a 1.6? If soldering is the only option can I solder the wires in the areas shown even though there isnt any solder in the spot? I have minimal soldring experience so if theres a way around it I would appriciate any advice. Thanks.

Yes, some machines have so much lacquer on them you cant get anything in the holes. It's quite annoying.

You can try several things. You can use an exacto blade and shave some away, a fiberglass pen will do that too, but on both of those methods if you shave too much you can damage the contacts.

After you do a few, you know how much you can get away with, but the first time's a bitch.

Another thing you can try is a Qtip dipped in alchohol. Don't soak it, squeegee it out just so it's damp and see if you can get rid of the lacquer. Of course let it dry before you do anything else to it. I have heard of people also using gasoline for that trick.

Good luck with it, let us know how it turns out.

Thanks ModGod, i'll give it a try. I thought for a minute that Microsoft had one up on the Spider chip guys but I thought there was no way that they could have produced a new crop of boxes that would defy the chip in that short time since the chip was available. Oh well, hopefully i wont kill my friends box in the process. Thanks again for you advice!
